SWINGING-TAIBLE-LEG HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1916.
Application filed February 9, 1914. Serial No. 817,439.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S'roLznR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Swinging- Table-Leg Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in swinging table leg hinge, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective joint or hinge for attaching the bar of the swinging leg to the side rails of the table, which is known in the trade as a kitchen table.
A still further object of the invention is to make this joint of material capable of being bent, such as Wrought-iron and clenching the same to the bar of the swinging leg so that it will not only be firmly held in place, with or without the use of screws or nails, but will house in that portion of the bar to which it is attached, thus preventing the latter from splitting.
With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numeral to-the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of a portion of a bar of a swinging leg of a table of the character described, showing one form of my improved joint secured thereto and pivoted to the side rail of the table. Fig. 2, is a section at the line w:v of Fig. 1, clearly illustrating the manner of clenching the device in place upon the swinging bar. Fig. 3, is an elevation of the device before it has been clenched to the swinging bar. Fig. 4, is a side view of the joint.
In carrying out my invention as embodied in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, I form a joint from a single piece of sheet metal preferably wrought-iron and so bend the same as to produce a face plate 1 having inclosing sides 2 from which extends, the hinge members 3, each having a hole 4 therethrough for the passage of a nail 5 or screw which will serve as a pivot point upon which the device swings, this nail or screw being driven into the side rail 6' of the table, the sides also having formed therewith the extensions 7 which are turned inward at right angles to the sides and terminate in the prongs 8, which when clenched in the swinging bar 9 assume the position shown in Fig. 2. When the joint is thus clenched to the swinging bar it will be seen that it partly incloses.
the end of the bar to which it is attached, thereby preventing this wooden bar from splitting, and if further security is needed the nails 10 may be driven through suitable holes in the sides 2 for assisting in holding the device in place.
Heretofore considerable difliculty has been. met with securing the swinging jaw to the swinging bar, since when the former is made of cast iron or the like and is secured to the bar by nails it is easily broken and is also liable to break in use, whereas these disadvantages are entirely overcome in my improvement, since the device is made entirely of malleable material and is clenched to the swinging bar in such manner that it cannot be displaced, and the bar cannot be split in using.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as hereinshown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is
A hinge formed from a single piece of metal comprising a face plate adapted to, lie against one face of an object, a pair of parallel integral side members projecting from said face plate at right angles thereto and adapted to lie against two other faces of the object, a perforated hinge member formed integral with each of said side members and projecting therefrom in line therewith and parallel to each other, an extension formed integral with each of the side members projecting therefrom at right angles thereto toward each other and parallel with the face plate, said extensions being of less length than the length of said members and prongs formed integral with said extensions and projecting therefrom at right angles thereto toward the face plate and parallel with the side members as shown and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two 10 subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES STOLZER.
