UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

DAUBER FOR HOLDING AND APPLYING PASTE OR LIQUID SUBSTANCES. h
` SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent N o. 693,305, dated February 11,1902.
Applicatimifiled June 7, 1901. Serial No. 63,610. (No model.) l I dauber for applying paste and liquid sub stances to a surface-as, for instance, in applying blacking to bootsl and shoes-the dauber itself to fulfil the office of the ordinary dauber and of the box containing the blacking or liquid substance or paste which is to be applied to theV boot or shoe.
The object of the invention is again to provide a dauber for the purpose hereinbefore set forth which shall be convenient to handleA and which shall also preserve the paste or liquid in a moist state and in a neat and cleanly condition.
The invention consists in a dauber for holding and applying paste and liquid substances, consisting of a sheet-metal holder having a iat base, a flange projecting from one face of said base, and a moisture-absorbing pad fast to and projecting from the opposite face of said base, all so constructed that the pad shall be entirely free from any surrounding or inclosing metal or other substance, and thus be adapted to the purpose hereinbefore set forth--viz., of applying paste and liquid substances to other articles, such as as boots and shoesfand, further, shall be so con# structed as to be capable of being easily attached to or detached from lthe [iat base of the holder and which can be entirely used up or Worn out without any portion of the holder interfering with the use for which the article is intended.
The invention further consists in a dauber for holding and applying paste and liquid substances substantially as hereinbefore set forth, in combination withacover detachably attached to said holder and inclosing said pad.
The invention, moreover, consists in the combination and arrangements of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a dauber constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on line 2 2 ofFig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the danber with the pad-cover removed. Fig. 4. is an underneath plan ofthe holder detached. Fig.` 5 is a section taken on line5 5 of Fig. 4.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout theseveral views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 8 is a holderformed of a piece of sheet metal struck upV with a base 9, having a flange 10 integral therewith and consistin g of a straightcylindrical'portion 11 and semicircular rim l2,V said cylindrical portion l1 being joined to the base 9 by a conical portion 13 and to the semicircular rim 12 by another1 conical portion 14.
To the base 9 is fastened a pad 15, formed of fibrous material, such as felt, and thoroughly saturated with the paste or liquid substances which'it is desired to use. The pad 15 projects ydownwardly beyond the surface to which it is attached-viz., the 'base l9, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The holder 8 is rst formed as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the straight cylindrical portion 16, Fig. 5, being cut out'at 17 toallowthe handle 18 to beinserted and the said portion 16 turned over to form the semicir'cular rim l2, thus holding the handle 18 firmly fastened to the holder 8. The cylindrical cap 19, formed of sheet metal consists of a base 2O and a flange 21 integral therewith, said flange 21 formed to fit the exterior of the straight cylindrical portion 1l of the holder 8. Said cylindrical portion 11 is of a larger diameter than the diameter of the pad 15, and the conical portion 13 kserves to guide lthe cap to the cylindrical portion when the said cap is be ing placed upon the holder, the conical pori tion 14. serving as a stop for the cap.
It will be seen by reference to Fig. 2 that the cap when detaohably attached to the holder 8 by placing the sameupon the cylindrical portionA 11, as shown, does not come in contact with the pad either upon the interior face of the flange 21 or of the base 20, so that the paste or liquid substance in said pad does not soil the cap.
In using ,my improved dauber the cap 19 is rst removed from the holder and said pad is then rubbed upon the shoe in t-he case of a pad adapted forv that purpose, and a por 'ICO tion of the dressing or blacking with which the pad is saturated is thus applied to the leather of the shoe. After using the cap is returned to its position upon the holder, as shown in Fig. 2. 'It will thus be seen that my improved dauber is always in readiness for use and is applied directly to the shoe without any inconvenience and uncleanliness attending the use of a dauber and blackingbox, as heretofore employed. As the pad projects downwardly from the base 9, to which it is attached, beyond any encircling surface, the entire thickness of said pad may be used without the holder coming into contact with the leather of the shoe or other surface to which the paste may be applied.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure hy Letters Patent, is-
l. A dauber for holding and applying paste and liquid substances comprising -a sheetmetal holder having a flat base, a flange projecting from one face of said base, formed with a straight cylindrical portion of a diameter larger than that of said base, a semicircular rim on said ange, a pad fast to the opposite face of said base, and a handle partially encircled and held by said semicircular lllll.
2. A dauber for holding and applying paste and liquid substances comprising a cylindrical sheet-metal holder having a fiat base, a flange projecting from one face of said base, formed with a straight cylindrical portion of adiam-M eter larger than the diameter of said base, a semicircular rirn on said flange, said cylindrical portion being joined to said semicircular rim and to said base by conical portions, a pad fast to the opposite face of said base, and a handle partially encircled and held by said Semicircular ri in.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
QUINTON Gr.v PARVIN.
