I comment.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, RUSSELL WHrrooMn, a citizen of the United States, residin at Elizabeth in the county of Union and tate of New jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,- clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art tov which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. v
The present invention relates, generally, to containersfor cosmetic sticks, soap sticks and similar articles; and the invention has reference, more particularl to a novel construction of sanitary re llable container having a .novel means for holding and ad-" vancin the contents ready for use.
Thelnvention has for its principal object to provide a novel. construction of refillable carrier and protective covering for cosmetic sticks, andthe like, which serves not only to protect the contents from dirt, germs, etc., when'carried about, but also ,PIOVldOS a means for handling the contents, without I necessity of touching the same with the fingers, when making ordinary use and application of the contents, consequently providing a very sanitary and hygienic container. The; container also comprises an arrangement of arts which may be quickly lized bydipping in hot water.
The invention has for a further object to provide, in connection with a suitable enveloping casing, a means for gripping and" holding the contents relative to the casing so that the same may be easily advanced or fed upward out of the casing as the same is used without necessity of touching the contents with the fingers; and, furthermore,
the invention .has foranother object, to provide a gripping and holdingelement which permits of the contents to be refilled iii behind the stub of the almost consumed stick, so that the-latter continues to be fed' forward from behind until entirely consumed,
this being accomplished without necessity for touching or removing said stub from the gripping or holding device, but merely by inserting the new stick in the latter behind the stub of the old. Said gripping and holding device being further constructed to per mit the engaged stick to be readily and easily Specification of Letters Patent. advanced in a projecting or forward feedlngdirectlon, while'holding the same, firmly against backward movement or retraction through said holder or gripping device,
Other'objects of the present invention, not
at thistime more particularly enumerated,
W111 be clearl understood from the follow in detailed escription of the same.

described in the following specification, and I The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in wh1ch:-
Figure 1 is "a side elevation of the novel i construction of container, made according to and embodying the principles of my pres p r yi ent invention, the cover port1on being broken away and shown in'section.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal transverse section,
taken on
line 2--2 in said Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the container, with the cover portion removedand 1 shown in part'elevation and part section.
Flg. 4 is a central longitudinal vertical section. Y

or holding device therefor being shown in elevat1on. I Flg. 61s a perspective view ofthe stick and gripping or holding device therefor, re-
moved from the container.
Similar characters of reference are em ployed in all of the hereinabove described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-
character 1 indicates the complete novel container for cosmetic or soap sticks, and the like, the same comprising a tubular
main body 2 having a closed end wall 3 at its lower or bottom end, but open at its upper or top end. The reference-character 4.- indicates a cover member aving a closed
end wall 5 at its upper or top end, but open at its bottom end to ermit the same "to be telescopically engaged .end of said
main body 2.
over the upper or top vgripping and holding device comprising a short sleeve split at one sidethroughout its length to provide free longitudinally extending edges having formed therein a plurality of slightly inwardly and upwardly inclined serrations or
teeth 7. Connected with said
sleeve 6 is an outwardly and laterally projecting
shank 8 havin at its free end a button or
head 9 providing a manipulating finger piece. i
The
reference character 10 indicates a 4 stick of cosmetic, such asa lip-stick, eyeto the
main body 2, the
slots 11 and 12 will respectively straddle the
shank 8 of the
finger piece 9, so, thatlall. openings leading brow pencil, or'a stick of soap such as a shaving stick, or the like. The
stick #10 isinserted,
throughthe
sleeve 6 fromthe lowerend, and pushed upwardly therethrough to project its upper end ashort distance above the upper extermity of said sleeve '6. Theserrations or
teeth 7 will not prevent or impede the upward movement of the
stick 10 through the
sleeve 6 when the sleeve is held in the fingers and the lower end of the stick is pressed against a stationary surface to impart an upward movement thereto through the sleeve, but said serrations or teeth will impede a downward or retractive movement of the stick through the sleeve, since the inwardly and upwardly inclined points or projections afforded by the teeth will dig into the surface of the stick to,arrest such movement. It must be understood that I -do not wish to limit myself exactly to the the convenience of the maker of the container.
After the
stick 10 has been assembled in gripped relation to the gripping or holding device the same is inserted within the
main body 2. The wall of said
main body 2 is provided with a short downwardly extending longitudinal slot 11, which receives the
shank 8 of the finger piece of the gripping or holding device, as the same moves into the open end of said
main body 2. It will be noted that said slot is of short extent compared with the entire longitudinal extent of said
main body 2, and that it is open at its upper end. The length of the, slot 11 is necessarily shorter than the length of the
covermember 4,-so that when the finger piece is stopped by engagement with the lower end of the slot 11, and the
cover member 4 engaged overthe
mainbody 2, the slot 11 will be entirly closed over by the cover member. The length of the slot 11, however, is sufficient to permit the
finger piece 9 to he raised therein for the purpose of lifting the gripping or holding device a sufficient distance to project above the upper end of
themain body 2, the forward or upper end of the stick, so that the same is sufficiently exposed or projected to permit the user to make application of the stick to into the container are closed against the en trance of dust, dirt or other foreign subistances, and that consequentl the container is entirely closed in enveloping relation. to the
stick 10, and adequately protects the same from the sanitary and hygienic standpoint. a
As the
stick 10 is worn down in use the same may be quickly advanced in the holding or gripping device byremoving the latter from the
main body 2, and by grasping the holding or gripping device, without touching the stick with the fingers, and by then pressing the lower end of the stick against a stationary surface, the stick may be pushed upward through the holding and ripping device an advanced distance. dinarily the stickis advanced but a short distance beyond the upper end of the holding and gripping device, so that by merely manipulating the finger-
piece 9 to raise the same in the slot 11, the holding or gripping device is raised sufliciently to project the upper end of the stick beyond the end of the
main body 2, and exposed for use.
Another advantage of the holding or gripping device, is that it provides a means for holding
thestick 10 in such/a way that as the same is worn down to a butt or stub, a new stick may be inserted behind the butt or stub to be fed up in a follow after relation to the butt or stub, the latter being fed out by the following new stick until said butt or stub is entirely consumed. It will thus be apparent that the butt or stub does not have to be removed .or. handled in any way when inserting a refill or new stick, and in'respect to what may be termed the follow after method of inserting refills in the holding or gripping device, I have devised a holding means for combination with the enveloping container which is very superior to all devices or containers which reto the latter, and which further requires the securing of the stub or butt of the old stick upon the forward end of the new'stick, in order to render said stub or butt capable of further use. i
- a When the sticksof cosmetics or soap are enveloped in oiled paper, tin-foil or other similar covering, they are applied, fed and refilled in the same manner as above de-- scribed, and the top
annular edge 13 of the holding or ripping device serves as a gage or shear e geagainst which the covering material may be cut-or parted whenremov- 'ing'the same from'the outwardly or -up- Y wardly rejected portionof the'stick.
It 'wi be apparent that my novel constructibn of container provides a very eflicient protection of thestick enveloped there'- by, against contact with dirt, dust or the fingers, and consequently serves admirably to. maintain the same perfect sanitary condition. The container itself maybe easily and quickly sterilized by removing the holder or gripping device and the stick carried there-' by, and then dipping the main body2 and cover
member 4 in boiling-water. The hold- ,ingor gripping de'vi'ceand stick, where'the character of the latter will allow it, may
also be sterilized by quickly dipping the same in hotwater,-all of which aids in maintaining an adequate sanitary and hygienic condition as to said parts.
.Iam aware that somechanges may be made in the severalnovelarrangements and 1 combinations of the several devices and pants scribed in the appended claims,
as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of my present invention .as described in the foregoing specification and as" de- Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations .of the various devices and parts as set forth in the foregoing specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
