UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES PERCIVAL ROBERTSON, OF NORTH SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA.
POLISHING APPLIANCE.
roeaseo.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 6, 1914.
Application filed July 1, 1913. Serial No. 776,870.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that. I, JAMES PERCIVAL Ron reason, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 1 Sutherland street, North Sydney, in the State of New South Wales, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polishing Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in polishing appliances and is specially suitable for polishing boots and other articles of leather and the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an appliance whereby an outer polishing surface may be detachably secured over a pad so as to be readily renewed when worn out or clogged.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood I will refer to the drawings herewith in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the appliance. Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively a longitudinal and a cross sectional elevation. Fig. 4- shows perspective views of the parts separately, while, Figs. 5 and 6 are similar views before and after insertion of the looking piece.
7 represents a backing or plate preferably of sheet metal to which is attached by adhesive or other means a pad 8 of felt or other suitable material. The plate 7 has preferably serrations or teeth 9 on its peripheral edge whereby a detachable polishing cover 10 of velvet or other suitable material is held in position when a band 11 having an inwardly extending flange 12 is passed over the pad.
13 represents a locking piece provided with catches 1st which take in the recesses 15, the latter being formed in the band 11. The locking piece 13 has beveled or tapered sides 16 to facilitate insertion into the band 11. and preferably recessed for the reception of a brush 17 which is divided by a recess 18 for holding a tin of the polishing substance.
In renewing the detachable polishing material or cover the locking piece 13 is withdrawn also the band 11 enabling the material to be removed from the teeth of the plate 7. A fresh cover or strip of material is then placed over the pad and on the band 11 being passed over it the teeth are forced into the turned over edges of material and against the flange 12 of the band when the locking piece is inserted.
I claim as my invention 1. A polishing device comprising a plate, a polishing cover applied over one side of said plate and engaging the edge thereof, a retaining band applied to the periphery of said plate and cooperative with the polishing cover to hold the same thereon, and a locking member applied to the opposite side of said plate and cooperative with said retaining band.
2. A polishing device comprising a plate having a serrated periphery, a polishing cover applied over one side of said plate and engaging the serrated periphery of the plate, a flared retaining band removably applied over the periphery of said plate and having an inturned flange cooperative with said cover to hold the latter in engagement with the serrated periphery of the plate, and means for locking said band in position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES PERCIVAL ROBERTSON.
Witnesses CHARLES E. GRAHAM, HENRY CLARKE.
