SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 681 ,585, dated August 27, 1901.
- Application filed March 16, 1901. Serial No. 51,535. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM FOWL- RING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Albia, in the county of Monroe and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Dental Cup, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a dental cup for taking impressions of the lower jaw, and it is characterized by a movable wall or walls, specifically the inner walls, whichcnable me to take a better impression of the gums.
This specification is a specific description of one form of the invention, while the claims are definitions of the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
a indicates the handle of the device, and b the cup proper, which is shaped to set over the jaw and to carry the plastic material in which the desired impression is formed. The cup is provided at opposite sides with inwardly-disposed projections 0, here shown in the form of metallic straps riveted to the cup. These projections carry eyes or rings cl, and they also carry the movable sections 6 of the inner side walls of the cup. These movable sections are supported to swing freely, as indicated in Fig. 3, and have upwardly-disposed shanks e to facilitate their manipulation. The cup may be constructed of any material and in any size desired. The eyes or rings d are mounted friction tight, so that when thrown to the position shown in Fig. 3 they will act to hold the wings or movable sections 6 in place.
In using the invention the parts are first placed in the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and when the cup is placed on the gums the shanks e are moved apart, thus throwing together the wall-sections e and pushing away from the gums the muscles of the tongue and mouth, which ordinarily lie against the gums and interfere with a proper impression.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A dental impression-cup having a staa' tionary outer side wall and an inner side wall mounted to swing toward and from the outer side wall, for the purpose specified.
2. A dental impression-cup having a stationary wall, and an oppositely-situated wall mounted to swing with respect to the sta-' tionary wall and means for holding said movable wall in a certain position, as set forth.
3. A dental impression-cup having an inward projection, an eye attached thereto, and an inner side wall hung to move freely on the projection, for the purpose specified.
4. A dental cup, having a Wall mounted movably with respect to the cup, for the purpose' specified, and a member mounted friction-tight on the cup to hold said wall in a certain position.
5. A dental impression-cup provided at opposite sides with inwardly-disposed projections, the inner side walls of said cup having movable sections mounted to swing on said projections, the movable sections being provided with upwardly-disposed shanks, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN WILLIAM FOWLRING.
W'itnesses:
