, Specification of Letters Patent.
VPatented Mar. 2, 1915.
n Application filed-April 10, 1909. Serial No. 489,226.
T o all whom it may concern 4 Be it known thatfI, Moens H. EIsnMAN, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Bag- Handles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to fasteners `for bag handles and seeks to provide a fastening device of simple construction having an improved interlooping ring for connecting the bag handle to the clip on the bag frame.
A further' object of the invention is to provide a protector plate in connection with the fastener arranged to prevent the rubbing of the ring upon the leather face of the bag frame.
rIlhe invention consists in the features of improvement hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed ont in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the improved fastening device with parts of the bag shown in section on the line 1 1 of Fig. 3; Fig. 2 is a similar view with parts shown in section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a side view with parts shown in section on the lines 3-3 of Fi s. 1 and 2.
he sides 1 of the bag which are formed of leather or other suitable material, and the bag lining 2 are secured at their upper edges to the angle bars 3 and t of the bag frame. rIhe frame bars 3 and 4 are formed of metal and are provided with a leather covering 5. The bag sides 1 and the lining 2 are secured in the usual manner to the inner faces of the vertical portions of they frame bars 3 and 4L by means of metal plates or bars-6 and rivets 7.
The'bag handle 8 is made as usual of leather. That shown consists of a double thickness of leather and terminates in a loop 9. The vhandle is connected by a ring 10 to a suitable clip securedto the upper face of the frame bar 3. The clip, in the form shown, is formed of Sheet metal, preferably brass, and is stamped up to form a body portion 11 having top, side and end walls, a central, transverse raised portion 12 and projecting base iianges or lips 13 at its ends.
The connecting or interlooping` ring 9 is formed of bendabe, non-resilient metal, preferably/brass, and tho body of the ring is preferably circular in cross Section as shown. The ring is separable at one point and one end of the ring is cut away on its underside and the other end is cut away on outer side to form overlapping end portions or tongues 1&1. These overlapping` end portions are provided with square or radial abutting end faces and shoulders 15 and 16 and with circumferentially extending meetlng faces 17, all of whichl faces are at right angles to the plane of the ring. The Overlapping, portions are of reduced thickness so that, when brought into line, the ring will be of uniform section throughout. By thus providing these overlapped portions, the
ring cannot be readily disengaged from the connected parts by spreading, as in prior constructions in which the end portions of the ring are not overlapped. The square ends and shoulders 15 and 16 of the overlapping end portions facilitate the bringing of these end portions accurately into line so that the face of the ring at the joint will be smooth and willk present a neat appearance. The ring is made of bendable metal so that the overlapping end portions can be moved in axial direction to open the ring, if necessary, to insert the same into the bag clip or into the loop of the handle.
The sides of the raised, central portion 12 of the clip are cut away from their lower edges to form openings or open-bottomed notches 18 through which the interlooping ring 10 extends. A protector plate 19 is arranged within the clip 11 and between the ring 10 and the leather face of the frame bar 8. This protector plate is held in place, preferably by extending the ends thereof beneath the base flanges or lips 13 of the clin, so that the rivets 2O which extend through the lips 13 and the frame bar 3 also extend through the ends of the protector plate. The protector plate in the form shown, is also provided with upturned side edges 21 which fit within the body portion 11 of the clip. These side edges are provided with notches 22 through which the connector ring extends. This plate closes the open-bottomed notches 18 and prevents the ring or any projecting edges i at the abutting ends thereof from rubbing yon and Wearing the leather cover 5 off the frame.
I claim as my invention l. In fasteners for bag handles, the conibination With the bag handle and the bag frame, of a chambered clip formed of a single piece of stamped metal and comprising araised central portion having depending side and end Walls and outwardly projecting base flanges extending from the lower edges of said end Walls, the depending side Walls of said raised portion having central, open-bottomed notches, a ring exy1 tending throughl said notchesl and the end of said handle, a separate, flat protector plate resting on thebase of said bag frame beneath the ring and extending beneath. the end base flanges of said frame, rivets extending through said base ianges and the ends of said protector plate and through said fra-nie, substantially as described.
2. In fasteners for bag handles, the com- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for bination with the bag handle and the bag frame, of a chambered clip formed of a single piece of stamped metal and comprisextending through said base iianges and through the ends of said protector plate and said frame, said protector plate having upwardly projecting flanges at its side edges extending into the chamber of said clip and centrally notched toy engage and position said ring, substantially as described.
