SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,338, dated November 17, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MILES E. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag Fillers and Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for filling sacks or bags with grain and the like and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts of which it is composed, all as will be hereinafter more fully explained and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The annexed drawings,to which reference is made,fully illustrate my invention,in which Figure 1 represents a side View of my improved bag-filler. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view, and Fig. 74 is a plan View of the shank, shown in blank form prior to being applied to the handle and scoop portion of the device.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the bag-filler, comprising the handle a, the shank b, and the scoop c, as well as the canvas chute or throat d.

The scoop c is constructed with the usual open front 6; but at the rear thereof the wall f has an opening g through it, the lower portion of said opening being on a level withthe floor of the scoop, while the upper portion is spanned by a wall h, the under side t'of which inclines upward and outward, providing a guideway in connection with the floor andv side walls of the scoop for the grain as it passes back to the opening in the rear, Surrounding this rear opening is a flange j, having a groove 76, to which one end of the canvas chute is secured, while the opposite end thereof is detachably secured to a sack to be filled, all as will be further hereinafter explained. i

The handle a is constructed in the usual well-known manner,'but not so with the shank portion, as this portion is of peculiar con-' struction-viz.-, the shank is stamped out of sheet metal, and the portion Z, which is bolted to the handle, is bent in tubular form for receiving the handle, and the side ears m m are extended and are bent at right angles to the body or main portion having perforations Serial No, 147.241. The upper opening is received by the grooved flange on the rear of the scoop and is secured thereto by twine or other simple fastening, and the lower enlarged end of said chute is secured to a hoop t, which is provided with a central groove 10 and a hook 1), while the canvas chute is provided with a flexible supporting-strip w, the upper ends: of which is stitched to the chute and the lower free end y is fixed to a belt 2, that is providedwith fasteners a,whereby the belt is secured to hoop when the sack is in position for fillingy and this supportingstrip not only serves to support the belt and keep it always with the chute, thus preventing said belt from displacement, but it serves the purpose of a handle in adjusting the hoop end of said chute to the mouth of a sack.

It will thus be observed from the above description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, that after the mouth of the sack or bag is adjusted over the hoop and the belt is fastened the same pressing into the groove, thereby holding the sack firmly thereto, the operator shovels the grain and the latter passes rearwardly through the scoop and out the rear opening into the flexible chute, the same passing therethrough and into the sack, and when the latter is filled the fasteners are released, thus releasing the belt, thereby releasing the mouth of the sack from the hoop, when another jenipty sack can be quickly attached for filling. The ;hook .securedto the hoop is designed'to' facilitate the ing first hooked thereon. The length of the chute should be long enough to allow about one-half of the sack to drag upon the floor of the buildingwhen being filled, and a device as herein described and shown is simple in construction easily and quickly operated, and at the same time cheap to manufacture, as well as being very durable.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The scoop provided with the inclined rear wall and rear opening and grooved flange surrounding said opening, the sheet-metal shank having the broad V- shaped portions provided with the side perforated wings and ears and the tubular portion adapted to receive the handle and means substantially as described for receiving the grain from the scoop.

2. The combination with the scoop provided with the rear inclined wall and opening, surrounded by the grooved rear projection, of the sheetmetal shank having the broadened end and tubular end, ears and side wings, the handle and the flexible chute pro vided with the grooved hoop, flexible strip and belt, substantially as described.

The within-described sack or bag filler consisting of the scoop, having the rear opening and inclined wall above said opening, the

projection surrounding the opening and provided with the groove, the shank formed of sheet metal having the tubular and broadened opposite ends and side wings and ears, the flexible chute provided with the grooved hoop, flexible strip and belt, said strip and belt attached to the chute and the handle connected to the tubular portion of the shank, the whole constructed and arranged substantially as described.

4. The combination with the scoop, provided with the inclined wall, rear opening and chute of the shank provided with the enlarged and narrow portions and side wings and ears said wings, ears and narrow portion provided with the perforations to receive fasteners whereby the same is secured to the scoop and handle, substantially as described.
