Unrrnn Srnfrns NEWVTON MONDAY, OF PLATTSBURG, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN F. DEBERRY, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR PREVENTING STAMNIERINGf SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,696, dated June 15, 1897.
Application filed October 1, 1896- Serial No, 607,594 (No model.)
To (LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEWTON MONDAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plattsburg, in the county of Clinton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for the Prevention and Cure of Stammering; and I do declare the following-to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of the invention as applied. spective view of invention.
The object of this invention is to provide means for the treatment and cure of stamzo mering and stuttering.
My invention consists in the provision of suitable means for the interposition between the jaws whereby, when the mouth is in proper position for articulation, tension is placed on the masseter muscles sufficient to support the lower jaw and thereby overcome the spas- Fig. 2 is a permodic actions thereof.
The invention more particularly consists in a device comprising a small clasp approxi- 0 mately U shaped in cross-section and formed to fit over and retain itself upon the teeth,
such as indicated at A in the accompanying drawings, and which has a projection B, which is designed to come in contact with the opposite jaw. This projection is usually in the form of a socket, in which is fitted a piece O of soft rubber or other suitable yielding material.
The clasp may be made of any suitable ma- 0 terial, such as any compositions or metals that may be used in making plates for artificial teeth, either by molding, compressing, or swaging into shapes or forms suitable for the purpose or design. It may be worn either upon the upper or lower jaw, the lower jaw, however, being preferred, and upon one or both sides of the mouth, but preferably upon both sides. It is removable and may be readjusted by the patient. It may be applied to one tooth only or to several teeth, as illus- 5o trated. Its presence between the jaws creates, as will be readily understood, a tension of the masseter muscles, whereby the spasmodic action from which arises the imperfection or impediment of speech is overcome or prevented. It is designed to effecta permanent cure in a short time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- The herein-described device for the treatment and cure of stammering, said device being adapted for interposition between the jaws and comprising a body portion of approximately U shape in cross-section and formed or fitted to engage and retain itself upon one or more of the teeth, and having also a hollow boss or projection extending toward the opposite jaw and forming a socket, and a piece or pad of yielding material seated in said socket and projecting beyond the end of said boss or projection, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NEWVTON MONDAY.
