UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR BAYLY VANES, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 680,298, dated August 13, 1901.
Application filed March 20, 1901. Serial No. 51 ,984. (No model.)
To all whmn it ntay concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR BAYLY VANES, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to latches for use in connection with doors, gates, and for other and similar purposes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which may be operated so as to open the door or gate by turning the knob-bolt in either direction.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings forma part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of my-improved door or 'gate latch in operation; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the operation of the latchby turning the knob or other operating device to the left; and Fig. 3a similar view showing the operation of the latch by turning the knob or other operating device to the right.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at 5 a part of a door or gate and at 6 a part of a door=frame or gate-post, which is provided with the usual catch 7, and in the practiceof my invention I provide a latch which consists of two parts 8 and 9, which are hinged together at 10 in such a manner that either part can fold upwardly, but cannot fold downwardly below a horizontal line.
In practice the knob-bolt or other device 11 is passed through the part 9, which is much shorter than the part 8, said part 8 constituting the latch proper, and beneath the part 8 is placed a pin 12, which prevents the latch from being depressed below a predetermined position. The part 8 of the latch is also provided with a spiral spring 13, Which is connected therewith between the pin 12 and the edge of the door or gate, and said spring is secured to the door or gate, as shown at 14.
When the latch is in operation, the spring 13 holds the part 8 thereof on the pin 12 and also in the catch 7, as clearly shown in Fig.
1, and by turning the knob-bolt or other device ll to the left the entire latch is raised, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the door or gate may be opened, and by turning the knobbolt or other device to the right the latch will be operated as shown in Fig. 3, in which the hinged ends of the said parts thereof will be depressed, the pin 12 operating as a pivot or fulcrum for this purpose, and the outer end of the latch will be raised so that the door 01 gate may be opened.
My improved latch may be secured to a metal plate, or it may be put in a lock-casing in the usual manner, and other changes in and modifications of the construction de scribed may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its ad vantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A latch consisting of two parts one of which is longer than the other, said parts be ing hinged together so as to fold in one di rection only, and the shorter part being pro= vided with an opening through which a knobbolt is passed, substantially as shown and de scribed.
2. The combination of a door or gate with a latch comprising two parts hinged together so as to fold in one direction only, a knobbolt passed through one of said parts, a pin secured beneath the other and a spring connected with the last-named part and with a door or gate and adapted to pull said part downwardly, substantially as shown and described.
3. A latch for doors or gates, comprising two parts one of which is shorter than the other, said parts being hinged together so as to fold'in one direction only, a knob or latch bolt passed through the shorter part and a spring for holding the longer part in a depressed position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 8th day of March, 1901.
ARTHUR BAYLY VANES.

ALGERNON HUGH WYATT, JOHN FISHER JONES.
