Description

N0. a1s,443.
I PATBNTED APR. 24, 1906. G. HOLDEN. LOCKING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 7. 1905,
Q .N. w rw UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HOLDEN, OF MEROHANTVILLE, NEW JERSEY,-ASSIGNOR TO MERRITT AND COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
LOOKING DEVICE.
No. 818A43.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 24, 1906.
Application filed February 7,1905. Serial No. 244,583.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HOLDEN, of Merchantville, county of Camden, and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Looking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to provide a simple and efficient means for locking a movable catch or bolt operating part or handle against actuation by means of a removable obstruction, such as a padlock, whereby the ordinary locking mechanism carried by the door or part to be locked may be omitted and the door may remain unlocked and iree to be opened or closed by the movement of the catch-operating part when the padlock orobstruction is removed.
While my invention may be applied to any object in which a door, lid, or cover is to be tuating part, such as a rotary handle, is carried by the door and is provided With a lateral projection, and a staple is secured to the door adjacent to, but out of the ath of the handle projection, so that in the a sence of other devices the catch-operating part may be actuated freely to open or close the door. struction, such as the hasp of a padlock, when fastened to the staple acts to obstruct the prof jection of the handle and securely lock it against movement to actuate the catch-opcrating part and open the door.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a locker-door provided with my improved iocking device, and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.
I have shown my lmprovements applied to .a three-part catch mechanism of known construction. This consists of top and bottom vertical bolts a I), provided with slotted arms 0 d, engaging the shaft of the rotary handle 6, and a plate f, carried by the handle-shaft and provided with a projection g, and two re- An obcesses or notches h h, which engage pins it on the bolt-arm's c d. When the handle-shaft is rotated, the platef is turned, and the projection 9 is moved into engagement with a suitable. catch on the locker-frame. At the 1 same time the plate f acts through the notches h h on the pins i i and projects the bolts a b into engagement with the top andbottom of the locker-frame. This particular form of three-way catch forms no art of my invention and may be modified or other forms may be used, if desired.
On the handle e or outer end of its shaft is a lateral projection is, and arranged adjacent to this projection, but so as not to obstruct it, is a staple m on the door-plate n. As this staple m does not obstruct the projection 7c, the handle may be turned freely to operate the bolts and catch actuated thereby.
| In Fig. 1 the full lines show the positions of i the handle and projection when the door is closed and the bolts and catch are projected, and the dottedlines show their positions when the bolts and catch are retracted to open the door.
i ed to be passed through the staple m and to j act as an obstruction to the projection k, and j thus to prevent the handle being turned and j the door opened. Consequently when the hasp of the padlock is locked the door also will be securely locked and cannot be opened I until the padlock is unlocked and its hasp removed from the staple m. j What I claim as new, and desire to secure 1 by Letters Patent, is as follows: i 1. In a locking device, the combination of j a rotary catch-actuating handle having a projection, a staple adjacent to said handle but out of the path of the projection when the j handle is turned, and a detachable padlock I l i Vertical bolts and a lateral catch, means for n is a padlock, the hasp o of which is adaptsimultaneously projecting or retracting said struct said projection and prevent the operabolts and catch, a handle carried by the door tion of the handle. 10 to be locked for operating said bolt and catch In testimon of which invention I hereunactuating means and provided with a projecto set my han .tion, a staple alsocarried by the door ar- GEO.
