IN VINI'UH:
UNITED STATES PATENT @rrron.
JOHN W. MOAULIFFE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
COLLAR BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,157, dated July 23, 1901.
Application filed June 20, 1900.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN W. MoAULIrFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in collar-buttons; and it consists in the peculiar and novel construction and the combination of parts whereby a spring-pin is seecured to the head of the button for the purpose of fastening the necktie or scarf to the collar-button, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a side view of a collar-button containing my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view, partly in section, showing the construction of the head of the collar-button, the pin, and the safety device for protecting the point of the pin. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of part of the head of the button, showing the construction of the safety-latch protecting and holding the pointed end of the pin.
In the drawings, a indicates the shank of the collar-button, b the shoe, and c the head of the collar-button. In the construction of this collar-button the end of the shank is flanged outward to form the annular flange a. The head is formed of sheet metal, which is stamped in a die to give it its convex or spheroidal form. In making this head I stamp out a hole 0 near the peripheral edge of the head for the reception of the Wire 0 forming part of the spring-pin c and also punch out the slots 0 c and raise the convex shield 0 which forms the safety-fastening for In securing this the end of the spring-pin 0 Serial No. 20,961- (No model-l head to the shank I place the disk 0 on the annular flange a and secure the Wire 0 to the disk, preferably by solder, and then roll or burnish the edges of the head a under the annular flange a to secure the head to the shank. When the safety-pin is to be used, a slight pressure on the pin permits the point to be moved laterally to one or the other of the slots 0', when the pin, being released, will assume the position shown in. broken lines in Fig. 3. The necktie may now be secured on the pin 0 A slight pressure on the pin carries it through one of the slots 0 and under the concavo-convex shield 0 thereby locking the pin and protecting the point against injury.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination with the shank of a collarbutton having the annular flange a, of the disk 0 the wire 0 secured to the disk, the spheroidal head 0 formed of sheet metal and perforated to form the opening a for the insertion of the wire 0 the slots e c, the concavoconvex safety-shield a integral with the sheet metal of the head, and the spring-pin 0 formed integral With the wire 0 whereby the pin is flexibly connected with the head and adapted to secure the wearing-apparel to the head while the point of the pin is covered, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN W. MCAULIFFE.
