IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTON-HOLES FOR PAPER COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,753, dated June 19, 1866.
A the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents the inner side of a fullsized collar, provided with my improved but-- ton-holes. Figs. 2 and 3,'detached end portions of the same, with a button, B, passing through the slots c at each side ofthe buttonhole A in Fig. 2.
In my said invention the collar C may be of any convenient form or size, and made to stand up or to turn down over a cravat, as are the ordinary collars.
The button-holes Aare cut through the substance of the paper, one of them at or near the middle of the collar and one near each end, as is usual. Y
To prevent the button-hole from being torn and destroyed by forcing the button sidewise through the hole, I provide a lateral slot or opening, c, at each side of the button-hole A, said slots being sufficiently wide to admit the thickness of a common button, and long enough, from the extremity v of one slot to that of the other slot, to allow any common button to pass freely through the same and not tear or injure the paper of which the collar is made.
In the use of my improved button-hole for paper collars the button B may be easilypushed through the slots o, as shown in Fig. 2, when the eye of the but-ton will move readily forward in the button-hole A and allow the button to come out onto the face or outer side of the collar in its proper position.
In dctaching a collar from the button or buttons it is only necessary to guide the button into the slots o and move it gently forward or backward, when it will slide freely through the slots c and the button-hole A, and the collar is detached.
My improved button-hole is intended to be applied to paper wristbands as well as collars, and is equally or more useful in the former than in the latter.
I sometimes make my im proved button'holes with an incision or cut, d, at each side, as shown in Fig. 3, instead of removing a portion of the paper to form the slots c.
I am aware that a button-hole for paper collars has been patented by B. F. Porter, of Nashua, New Hampshire, consisting of a semi circular opening at one end of the button-hole and a lip or ily arranged in connection there- With.
I do not claim having invented the equivalent, in principle or action, ofthe above-named button-hole; but
