DANTON O. BRUNNER, OF SOMERSET, OHIO.
TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,693, dated May 21, 1901.
Application filed July 28, 1900.
To @ZZ when@ it 1v1/tty cmi/cern:
Be itlmown that l, DANToN O. BRUNNER, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Somerset, in the county of Perry and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Tool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a tool capable of use for various purposes and which will be light, durable, and handy to manipulate.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter f-ully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Referenceis to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicat-e corresponding parts in all the igures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved tool closed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the improved tool, the part-s being in closed position. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the main portion of the tool, the jaws of the tool being opened and Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken practically on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken'substantially on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 6 6 of Fig. 2.
The tool proper consists of two opposing members A and B, having handle portions 10, jaws 11, formed at the outer ends of the members A and B, adapted to close together and constitute pliers, and body-sections 12,0f disk-like construction, located between the handle portions and the jaws 11. The bodysections V12 of the members A and B of the tool have their outer faces flush with the outer side faces of the said members; but the handle portions 10 and the jaws 11 of said members extend beyond the inner faces of the body-sections 12, so that the body-sec- Serial No. 25,109. (No model.)
is formed having a longitudinal cutting edge 16, and when the members of the tool are brought together and the main jaws 11 are closed together the cutting jaw or blade 15 will enter a recess 17, produced in the jawsection l1 of the member B, as illustrated in Fig. 2. When the members A and B are brought together, the cutting edge 16 of the jaw or blade 15 will pass over the cutting edge of a blade 18, rigidly secured in the inner surface of the body of the member A, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the said blade 18 eX- tending into a portion of the jaw 11 of the member B, as is particularly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The action of the plate 14 is automatic to the extent that the blades 16 and 18 will be separated when thejaws 11 are separated, and said blades 16 and 18 are brought together when the jaws 11 are closed. The two jaws 11 form nippers or pliers. The automatic action of the plate 14 is brought about by forming a segmental boss 19 upon the inner face of the body 12 of the member B, as is also shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and the inner edge of this boss faces the inner edge of the blade 15 and the plate 14, of which the blade is a part. The said inner edge of the boss 19 is beveled from its center in opposite directions, forming two opposing inclined planes 20 and 21. When the members are closed together, the inner end of the plate 14 is engaged by the rear in clined plane 2O of said boss 19 and the blade 15 is carried in the direction of the xed blade 18. When the members are carried apart, so as to open the main jaws'll, the outer inclined plane 21 of the boss 19 engages with the jaw or plate 15 and forces it away from the fixed blade 18. The boss and the plate of these two blades are clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
An eyelet-set 22 is secured upon the bottoni face of the member A near the pivotal connection between the two members, as is shown in Figs. 2 and v3, and adjacent to this eyeletset 22 a recess 23 is formed in the under face of the member A and in this recess a punch 24 is pivoted, the trunnion 25 whereof, as shown in Fig. 4, is provided with adjacent IOO dat surfaces 26, adapted to be engaged by a within the recess 23, as shown in Fig. 2, while the other dat surface of the trunnion of the said punch is in engagement with the said spring when the punch is in working,r position, as shown in Fig. 3. One end'of the spring 27 is secured to a wall of the recess 28, the free end of the spring being that which engages with the trunnion 25. The spring 27 therefore serves to hold the punch steady while in its Working or in its closed position.
At the rear end of the member A a chamber 28 is formed, normally closed by a suitable cover 29, and tacks, eyelets, or other small articles may be stored in this chamber 28. The rear end of the member B is oiset outward from the main portion of the handlesection of said member and is provided with arectangular or polygoiialopening, thus forming a Spanner 80.
It is evident that a tool constructed as above set forth is very compact and may be used for many purposes, being especially serviceable around a stable or as atool to be carried in a vehicle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentblade portion of the plate, the blade of the plate being adapted to move to and from the fixed blade, and a boss formed upon the inner face of the body of the other handle-section adjacent to the pivot-point of said section, which boss has inclined surfaces adapted for engagement with the said pivoted plate at each side of its fulcrum.
In testimony whereof I. have signed my i name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
i DANTON O. BRUNNER.
