TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that we, THOMAS W. SHAPLErGn and Moses J. Comms, of Boston, in the county of Suolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful improvement in Spring-Beds; and we do hereby declare the same to be fullyv described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a side eleva-tion, and
Figure 2 a transverse section of a Slat and its spring, as connected in accordance with our invention.
The spring used is a conical or conoidal spiral, made of wire, it being shown at A and its slat at B. Extending diamctrically across the base ofthe spring is a thin metallic bar, C, whose ends are-bent around 'the opposite parts a a ofthe base-coil of the spring. A screw, D, going through the slet and the middle of thesaid bar has a nut, E, screwed upon it and against the bar, the head b of the screw resting against the slat or a washer, c, arranged between the slat and the head. The end portion of the base-coil of the sp1- ing n'e bend or coil around the next succeeding coil, Qrthe wire composing the spring, in the manner represented in iig. 2. This connection of the base-coil with the next coil causes the spring to be supported to better advantage than it otherwise would bc. i
The above-describcd mode of connectingthc spring and slat is very advantageous in comparison to others in use, and aiords a sure and strong support of the slat on the spring, one not liable to being accidentally deranged.
We cla-im the arrangement and combination of the cross-bar C, the screw D, and nut E with the slat, and the conical spring with the base-coil connected with the nextY coil of the spring, substantially as set forth.
THOMAS W. SHALEIGH,
MOSES J. COLMAN. Witnesses R. H. EDDY, SAMUEL N. PIPER.
