Be it known that I, DAVID B. HEnDEN, of Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented-an improvement in theConstruction of Step-Ladders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full and exact description of the same, reference being-hud to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. v

My invention consists in making a step-ladder with the sidestripsA-B, tcn'hichA the steps G are attached V by means of the dowe d cut on the end of the steps and running through or into the strips. l The ends of the steps also rest in the gains E in the strips, also making the brace F and stay IGr all of bent stu'.

Figure 1 is asideview, and shows the edge of the strips A. B, end of the steps C, with the dowel d running through the strips, vthe brace F, and the stay Gr of the brace;

Figure 2 is a front view, which shows the order of-bcnding the strips. The front strip A. is bent at the top2 and the'back strip B atthe bottom. rl-he ends G G of the stay are seen on the sides of the ladder.

Figure 3 is n view of the brace, with a. section of the stay passing behind it.

Itis not necessary tb follow positivelyr the'order of the strips here presented only so they are made of bent stn. The front may be bent at-the bottom, and the back st the top, tc.

The advantages gained by this invention A:tre increased strength and cheapness. In no way that I cen perceive may `iadders be so cheaply made, while the bend in the strips gives the most substantial bracing with out the extra. braces required in otheriadders made with strips. There is also no chance for the sides to spread apart and let out the steps, When the ladder is folded up the stay drops down below the end of the brace and is out of the way. p

What I caim as my invention, and desire t'c secure by Letters Patent, nre- The strips A B, brace F, and stay G, made of bent stu, substantially in the order and for the purpose named.
