UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
ROY H. SHOCK AND LLOYD B. RUSSELL, OF OKLAHOMA, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
PLOWS HARE-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 670,566, dated March 26, 1901 Application filed December 14, 1900. Serial No. 39,862. (No model.)
To alt whom it nutyj concern.-
Be it known that we, ROY H. SHOCK and LLOYD B. RUSSELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Plowshare-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to plows of that class in which the share is detachable from the moldboard; and it consists, specifically, in the means for fastening the share to the moldboard to permit the detachment of the share therefrom.
The object of our invention is to effect improvements in the construction of the moldboard and share of a plow, whereby the share may be readily attached to and detached from the moldboard, and in the construction of the devices by means of which the share is secured to the moldboard.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation showing the inner side of the moldboard and share of a riding or sulky plow provided with our improved means for fastening the share to the moldboard and detaching the same therefrom. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, taken on a plane indicated by. the'line a a in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same, taken on a plane indicated by the line b b in Fig. 1. Fig. 4is a detail sectional view. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of aportion of the keeper. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the keys.
In the embodiment of our invention we provide a moldboard 1 and a share 2, which is detachable from the moldboard. The latter is provided on its inner side with metallic straps or plates 3 4, secured thereto or which may be formed integrally therewith, the lower sides of the said straps or plates forming depending flanges 5 6, which overlap a joint 7 between the moldboard and the share and bear on the inner side of the latter, said flanges serving to dispose the share in the same general plane as that occupied by the moldboard, with the surfaces of the share flush with the surfaces of the moldboard. The said flanges and the said share are proflanges 11 on the upper and lower sides of the longitudinally-movable keeper 12, and thereby secure said keeper 12 to the said plates 3 4. The said keeper is provided with clearance-openings 13, which are adapted to register with the openings of the moldboardflanges and the share. The said keeper is further provided with longitudinal-slots 14, which communicate with the said clearanceopenings 13. The sides of the said slots are formed by wedge-shaped cams 15, which are longitudinally disposed, as shown. A handlever 16 is fulcruined on the inner side of the moldboard on a bolt or stud 17, which oper ates in a slot 18, with which the lever is provided. The lower end of the lever is pivotally connected to the keeper 12, as at 19. The function of the lever, as will be understood, is to move the keeper longitudinally. When the keeper is moved forward, its clearance-openings 13 are caused to register with the openings of the moldboard-flanges and the share. Keys 20 are inserted in the said openings, the said keys having heads 21,which fit in the countersunk openings of the share, stems 22,which fit in the openings of the moldboard-flanges, and laterally-extending shoulders 23, which engage the cams 15 of the keeper when the latter is moved backward by the hand-lever 16, so asto cause the shanks of the keys to be disposed in the slots 14, the said shoulders 23 and said wedge-shaped earns 15 coacting to bind the keys, the share, the
moldboard-flanges, and the keeper firmly together, as will be understood, and thereby securely fasten the share to the moldboard. The sides of the said shoulders 23, which coact with the said wedge-shaped cams 15, are
correspondingly beveled, as at 24.
It will be understood from the foregoing and I too from the moldboard when it becomes worn and it is necessary to provide the moldboard with another share.
lVhile we have herein shown and described our invention as applied to the moldboard and share of a riding or snlky plow, it will be understood that our invention is capable of use in connection With turning-plows of the ordinary construction which are provided with detachable shares, and we do not limit ourselves in this particular.
Having thus described our invention, we claim 1. In a plow, the combination of a moldboard, a detachable share, said moldboard and share being formed with an overlapping joint between them, alongitudinally-movable keeper on the inner side of the moldboard, said keeper having clearance-openings and slots communicating therewith, keys projecting from the inner side of the share extending through the openings with which the moldboard is provided and having shoulders engaging the keeper on opposite sides of the said slots, and an operating-leverconnected to said keeper, substantially as described.
2. In a plow, the combination of a moldboard, a detachable share, said moldboard and share being formed with an overlapping joint between them, a longitudinally-movable keeper, having clearance-openings, slots comshaped cams thereof, substantially as dcscribed.
3. In a plow, the combination of a share, a moldboard, the former being detachable from the latter, said share and moldboard having an overlapping joint formed between them and provided with registering openings, keys fitted in said openings and having engaging shoulders at their inner ends, a longitudinallymovable keeper having clearance-openings for said shoulders and slots communicating with said clearance-openings, whereby the said keeper may be engaged at points on the sides of said slots, by the said shoulders of said keys, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
ROY H. SHOCK. LLOYD B. RUSSELL.
