Description

(No Model.)
W. T. RHODES.
PLOW.
Patented Jan. 8, 1889 .Attorneya UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM TAYLOR RHODES, OF FLATONIA, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO RICHARD O. FAIRES, OF SAME PLACE.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,051, dated January 8, 1889.
Application filed August 2, 1888.
To all whom/it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VILLIAM TAYLOR RHODES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flatonia, in the county of Fayette and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in plows, particularly to that portion of the plow known as the point; and it has for its object to produce a point that may be reversed, so that both ends may be utilized or may be made to project sufficiently to convert the plow into a subsoil-plow.
To this end the invention consists of a blade with two or both sets of bolt-holes and a double-ended point with holes nearer one end than the other.
Before describing the details of construction, I desire'to say that I am well aware of the patent granted to XVhit-e, No. 153,646, in which a standard is provided in its face with a longitudinal groove, the said standard having flanges on opposite sides at its lower end, which carry perforations for the attachment of a share or shovel, and in such construction a reversible point is employed adapted to be confined within the groove of the standard, between the flanges thereof, and beneath the shovel. This point, however, is not adapted to extend below the point of the shovel, and when reversed have one end extend farther below the said shovel than the other end.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a plow with my invention attached thereto and shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the plow-blade; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the point.
In the annexed drawings, A represents a plow or cultivator beam, and B a standard, of the usual construction, secured thereto. To the standard is secured a blade, O, of any suitable form, that shown being of the diamond type. Near the upper or broad end of Serial No. 281,719. (No model.)
the blade it is provided with countersunk holes F, for the reception of bolts E, by means of which it is secured to the standard B,'the lower end projecting below the said standard, as usual, Near the pointof the blade 0 are countersunk holes F for the reception of bolts G, by means of which a point,
H, (see Fig. 3,) is secured to said blade. As will be seen, this point H is double-ended and is provided near one end with holes I, to match the holes F, and are countersunk to receive the heads of the bolts G, before referred to.
The point above described may be applied to the blade or shovel C after the samev has been in use until its point has become worn, the holes F being closed by the bolts G, the heads of which rest in the countersinks and present a smooth surface to the action of the earth.
\Vhen used for the purpose of replacing or renewing the worn point of the blade, the point H is secured to the said blade with its shorter end projecting, and when used as a subsoil -plow the point may be reversed and have its longer end projecting.
Having described my invention, what I claim is The combination, with a plow or cultivator blade provided with countersunk holes near its lower end and in. advance of the lower end of the standard, of the double-ended point H, provided with countersunk holes nearer one end than the other, the said point being constructed to be secured to the blade by bolts passing through the holes in bot-h the blade and point before mentioned, whereby the said point may be reversed and positively secured 8 5 at different lengths below the shovel, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM TAYLOR RHODES.
