UNITED STAT S PATENT 'QFFICEQ FORREST E. FREEMAN, OF WORTHINGTON, MINNESOTA.
HORSE-COLLAR FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,043, dated March 11, 1890.
Application filed December 14., 1889- Serial No. 333,698- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FoEREsr E. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vorthington, in the county of Nobles and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Collar Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, andto the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in couplings or fastenings designed for use uponhorsecollars, and it has for its object to provide an improved fastening or coupling of this character that shall in itself form a perfect lock and yet allow the collar to play back and forth as the horse is in motion, and which will not wear on the hame-strap.
The novelty resides in the peculiarities of construction and the combinations, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a side view illustrating my improved coupling asapplied-to a horse-collar. Fig. 2 isa top plan view of the two parts of the coupling separated and detached from the collar. Fig. 3 is a section on the line .2 z of Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the two adjacent ends of a horse-collar, which are to be coupled by my improved fastening or coupling. The two parts of the coupling are to be connected with the said ends in any well known or desirable manner. The portion B of the coupling is of metal, formed at one end with a lockinghead 0, substantially T-shaped, as shown in Fig. 2, with one arm of the cross portion of the T slightly longer than the other. The portion D of the coupling is formed With a hook or loop a to receive a strap in the usual manner, and at its end is formed with a rightangled portion b, which is provided with a cross passage or slot 0 at the bottom, which communicates, by means of a vertical slot cl at one side of said right-angled portion, with the upper slot or passage-way e, parallel with the slot 0, but of less length, as shown clearly in Fig. 3.
To look the parts, the T-head of the part B is first inserted through the longer slot 0 until the cross -bar thereof passes entirely through the slot; then the shank f of the T- head is coincident with the vertical passage or slot (Z, when it is forced down said slot and the head then moved at right angles to the vertical slot, bringing the parts into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The three movements necessary to lock the parts are indicated by arrows in Fig. 3. Of course a reverse movement of the parts is necessary to disengage or unlock them.
WVhat I claim as new is- 1. In a collar-fastening, the combination, with the part B, having a T-shaped head, of the part D, having two parallel slots of different lengths connected at one end by a slot or passage-Way at right angles thereto, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a collar-fastening, the combination, with the part B, formed with a T-shaped head, of the part D, formed with loop a and with right-angled portion 1), the latter having two parallel slots connected by a slot extending at right angles thereto, the parallel slots being of different lengths, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my namein the presence of two Witnesses.
FORREST E. FREEMAN.
