Description

POLE 0R THILL CDUPLING. No. 489,579. Patented Jan. 10, 1893.
m lll lll www f/O e 557ml,"
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILLIP WEIDNER, OF SAYLOR SPRINGS, ILLINOIS.
POLE OR THILL COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,579, dated January 10, 1893.
Application tiled August 16, 1892. Serial No. 443,211. (No model.)
.To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILLIP WEIDNEE,'a citizen of the United States, residing at Saylor Springs, in the county of Clay and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pole and Thill Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pole and thill couplings and it has for its objects among others to provide a simple and cheap yet durable and efcient thill coupling, easily applied, noiseless, and readily adjusted.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which Figure l is a top plan of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the locking plate and its screw rod, detached.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views in which they appear.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a clip of any suitable construction secured in place by the shackles or other analogous devices a, the
cross bar of the clip or loop being preferably substantially round as seen best in Fig. 2.
B is a bar or plate having at its inner end a hook t) adapted to receive and engage the said cross bar as seen best in Fig. 2 the end of the hook extending somewhat below the lower face of the bar or plate as seen in Fig. 2.
C is a plate having at its outer end an upturned portion or lug c to engage a hole d in the under face of the bar or plate B as seen best in Fig. 2, and between its ends is secured thereto the rod or boltD which passes through a hole in the bar or plate B and receives a thumb nut E, a washer F being preferably employed around the bolt as seen in Fig. 2 and upon which the thumb nut bears as shown.
The operation will be readily understood. When the thumb nut is loosened the plate C drops sufficiently to allow it to be turned in any direction, see dotted lines in Fig. l, and
.when the hook of the plate C is engaged over the cross bar of the loop or clip the plate C is brought around parallel with the bar or plate B, the lug of the plate C is entered in the hole of the plate or bar B and the thumb nut is turned to draw the plate O against the bar or plate B as seen in Fig. 2, when the inner end bears against the under side of the said cross bar and the parts are thus tightly held in'position. The extended end of the hook of the bar or plate B protects the end of the plateC as seen in Fig. 2 and preventsits sticking out where it might be hit or engaged by anything to displace it.
The construction is simple, readilyapplied f to a pole or thill and can be quickly removed from one to the other and easily tightened or adjusted.
What I claim as new is;-
l. The combination with the upper plate with hook at one end, and a hole in its under side of the plate having a lug at one end to engage the hole in the hooked plate, and a bolt rising from between its ends through a hole in the upper plate, and a thumb nut on the upper end of the said bolt, as and for the purpose specified.
2.l The combination with the hooked plate having a hole in its under face, of a plate swiveled on the said plate and provided with a lug at one end to enter said hole andabolt projecting upward from the under plate between its ends and passing through a hole in the upper plate, and athu mb nuten the upper end of the bolt above the upper plate, the hook of the upper plate extending below the lower face of the lower plate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
PHILLIP WEIDNER.
