THILL COUPLING.
No. 335,898. Patented Feb. '2, 1886.
NITED STATES ATENT OFFICEO XVILLIAM P. TEED, OF LIVINGSTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES I. HEDDEN, OF NEXVARK, NEW JERSEY.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIE'ZCATI 2Q forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,398, dated February 2, 1886.
Application filed May 2, 1885. Serial No. 164,160. (No model.)
To all 1071 am it may concern;
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM P. TEED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Livingston, in the'county of Essex and State of 5 New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jack-Clips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is with the great I est simplicity and at a reduced cost of construc tion to prevent the noise or rattle induced in driving a vehicle; an d it consists i n the arrange ments and combinations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and embodied in the clause of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section;
Fig. 2, a perspective View of portions of the thilliron and clip; and Fig. 3 is a plan of the device.
In said drawin s, a indicates the clip,having jaws or cars ac,with bolt-holes or perfora- 3o tions 0 at or near the ends thereof to receive the pivotal bolt (1, which latter is preferably secured in the said perforated ears bya nut, e.
B indicates the thill or shaft iron, having its head 6 provided with a bolt-hole, f, to re 5 ceive the bolt (1, and be by itheld between the cars a a. Said head is provided with an cecentric projection or cam, g, at the side opposite or approximately opposite the shaftstraps b of the shaftiron. Back of said head in the clip is formed a chamber or opening, it, and into this is forced arubber block, i,which is held at the top and bottom by suitable lugs or projections, j k, which resist the tendency of the eccentric to throw the rubber from position. Said rubber bears against the head, 5 and thus overcomes or takes up any looseness or playofthe parts on one another, deadening any noise or rattle that would otherwise be occasioned in driving. A spring of any kind maybe employed in lieu of the rubber. lVhen the shafts are resting on the ground, or are raised to a position approaching a vertical line, the tension is removed from the rubber or spring which is allowed to expand to its normal condition, by which means the said block or spring will not readily lose its elasticity.
I am aware that in United States PatentNo. 204,491 of June 4, 1878, a clip is shown on which is formed, back of the pivotal end of the thill-iron in the chamber for the rubber block, a central projection for holding said rubber in place, the said projection sinking into said rubber at a point opposite the hearing for the eccentric, and thus reducing the thickness of the rubber at that point.
In my improvement there are two projec tions provided, one at the top and the other at or near the bottom of the rubber, so that a greater depth of rubber and increased elas ticity is attained or secured.
\Vhat- I claim as new is In combination, the clip having cars a a and lugs or projectionsj It at the top and bot tom of the rubber block, saidrubber block placed between said ears and projections and a thill-iron having an eccentric head bearing against said rubber, all said parts being arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of April, 1885.
, IVM. P. TEED.

OLIVER DRAKE, OSCAR A. MIoHEL.
