To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY G. OOLLEN- BURG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Ornamenting Walls and other Surfaces, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to stipples for use in decorating or ornamenting walls, ceilings, panelings, or other surfaces of plaster or wood or other material by means of paints,

'calcimines, or similar substances; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and by means of which ornamentations or decorations of the class specified may be much more quickly and conveniently done than has heretofore been possible.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a sectional side elevation of my improved stipple or decorating device, and

In the practice of my invention, as shown in the drawings, I provide a roller consisting of a central core A, inclosed in an outer casing B, of soft rubber or similar material, and the core A is preferably composed of wood and provided at each end with a metal head 0, which is secured thereto by screws or in any desired manner, as shown at D. The heads 0 are provided with spindles E, or in place of the spindles E a shaft may be passed entirely through the core A, as will be readily understood, and pivoted to the spindles E is a yoke-shaped frame F, to the central portion of which is secured a handle G.

The outer surface of the rubber casing B of the roller is stippled, as shown at H, or said roller may be provided with any desired configuration on its outer surface, and in the operation of the device the roller is passed over the paint, composition, or other pearance given to the decorated surface depending entirely upon the form of the configuration of the outer surface of the roller.

I also provide means to support the roller when it is not in use, so as to prevent the surface thereof from coming in contact with the article by which it is supported, and for this purpose I pivot also to the spindle E a supplemental yoke-shaped frame K, which when the roller is in use is folded adjacent to the yoke-shaped frame F and held in contact with the handle G by a pivoted clip L; but when it is desired to support the roller in the manner above described the yokeshaped frame K is swung outwardly into the position shown in Fig. 2, when the roller may be supported, aswill be readily seen, by said frame K and by the handle G.

A spring-catch M or similar device is secured to one end of the handle-frame, so as to limit the backward movement of the frame K, and when saidframe K is not in use it is folded into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, in which position the roller is free to be operated, as hereinbefore described.

The spring-catch M is segmental in form, as shown in Fig. 2, and is provided at its free end with a loop-shaped recess m, which receives the end of the supplemental yokeshaped frame or support K when the latter is in the position shown in Fig. 2 and holds said frame or support in said position; but a pull on said frame or support will release it from the spring-catch, or the end of the spring-catch may be moved backwardly for this purpose.

It will be apparent that the roller may be constructed in various ways, and the entire roller may be composed of rubber, if desired, and the entire device is also simple in construction and operation and well adapted to turn thereon, a'spring-catch connected with said'framefor limiting the movement of said support and a device for connecting the support with the handle, substantially as shown and described.
