-TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN CARTER, of the town of Winchendon, in the county of Worcester, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Machine and Apparatus for Painting, Graining, Ornamenting, and Varnishing Pails, Tubs, Chur-ns, and other wood articles of hollow ware; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making v a. part of this specification, in which- 4Figure 1 represents the apparatus or machine for graining pails, ttc., in perspective.
Figure 2 shows a modification of the same, with a reservoir for the paint, varnish, or coloring and grannngmatter, and a roller to communicate with and supply the die or printing-roll.
The object of my invention is to facilitate and economize the painting, graining, ornamenting, and varnishing of pails, tubs, churns, and other articles of hollow ware.
My invention consists in the combination of the die or printing-roll (or'a iiexible roller) with a corresponding elastic-surface roller, to distribute varnish, sizing, paint, or any coloring-matter for graining, gilding, or ornamenting pails, tubs, churns, 8:0., with a reservoir and supply-roller to convey the color to the distributingroll or cylinder to be brought in contact with the die or printing-roll.` 4
Also in the construction and arrangement of gear-mechanism and head or chuck for` holding the pail, and revolving it, in combination with the rock-shaft or other device to bring ther die' or printing-roll alternately in contact with the distributing-roller and the revolving pail, or other article to be painted, ornamented or varnished.
To, enable others to make and use my 'im/entien, I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawings, and .to the-letters marked thereon.
A table or bench, A, of suitable height and dimensions, supports the distributing-roller B, it being hung on a crank-shaft, b, having its bearings in two upright posts, c c. The distributing-roller B may be made of any desired form to correspond with the surface of the die or printing-roll D, and of any suitable material for the purpose. The vdie or printing-rolls D may be cast on a cylindrical base of wood, d, so as to be in a whole, unbroken surface. It may be a plain, smooth, elastic surface, for the purpose of putting on a plain coat of sizing, paint, or varnish; or it may be divided off into staves or sections e e e, as seen in g. 2, for the purA pose of imitating s'taves ofditferent kinds and color of wood; or it may be cast with a. raised printing-surface for graining the staves fff in sections, as seen in tig. 1. It will readily he seen that they may be cast so as to imprint any ornamental design or configuration that fancy my dictate, and, by changing the dieiroll D, any
` desired number of colors may be imprinted so as to harmonize with each other, and produce a high style of ornamenting in colors in the most rapid manner. To a standard, E, secured to the bench A., are the chuck and gear-mechanism on which to hold and revolve the pail F, tub, or other article for painting. This may be so arranged with gear-wheels that any desired motion may be given to the article to bc. painted, and the crank handle G to turn it with may be placed in the most -convenient position for the operator. The painting, grain= ing, or ornameuting die-roll'Dmay behung on jonrnalst h in the vertical frame H H on a rock-shaft, I, to be operated bythe lever J by the foot, a cord, y, and weight, 7e, or a spring to hold it in'contact with the distributing-roller B, and can be alternately brought to bear u/pn the pail F, tub, or other article, by the action of the foot of the operator. The' coloring-matter or paint may be put on to the distributing-roller B with a brush by hand, and conveyed on th the printing-roll D by turning the crank b, as shown in iig. 1. This'process requires two persons to operate the machine rapidly.
Another mode of constructing the machine so that one person can operate it with great facility, is shown iniig. 2, which is provided with a reservoir, K, for thc paint or varnish, in which a counter-roller, L,.dips in the substance, and is revolved by its contact with the distributing-roller B, supplying it with the paint to be taken by the printing-roll D, and deposited on thc article. In this arrangement the series of painting-rollers D`B L may all be connected by gcar-whecls.or a belt, so as to be operated by the crank G that turns the'pail F. The die or printing-rolls may hc made in elections, put on to staves so that the position of the figures or. designs can be changed, thus enabling a greater variety to be produced with a less number of printing-rolls.
The stares may be secured to the base or heads to join the cylinder by having the ends of the 'staves extend beyond the elastic printing-surfuce at both ends a suiiicient distance to insert screws, or drive on u. band When thus constructed, they'can beladjusted so as to be perfectly cylindrical by inserting wedges between tbe ends of the staves and the cylinder-head. y l
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
laThe combination of the flexible painting or die-printing roll with the supplying-roller, for painting,
graining., ornamenting pails, or other tapering articles.
2. I claim the mechanism for holding and revolving the pail, when mounted-on a bench ortable, in com bination with the movableprinting or die-roll, operating substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.
3. I claim casting graining or other ornamental configurations on conical rolls so as to form a continuous body, forrthe purposes herein described.
4. I claim making die or printing conical r'olls in sections, and securing them to the staves so as to change their position for making a. greater variety of ornamental designs, for graining and ornamenting hollow ware, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. Y
5. 1 claim applying a smooth coat or body of paint or varnish with a flexible roller to pai'ls,`tubs, or other articles ofv hollow ware, substantially in the manner hereinset forth.
In testimony whereof, Ihereunto subscribe my name, on this 18th day of March, 1867.
' JNATHAN CARTER.
