Description

L. JENNINGS. Machines for Graining Pails.
N0.153,962 Patented Aug.!1,=l8.74.
WITNESSES ATTURNEY mm: CO.PHDTO-L PA'RK PLACEJLY.
- lowing is a specification:
' type or printing rollers for grainin g,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LYMAN JENNINGS, OF WINOHENDON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR GRAINING FAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,962, dated August 11, 1874; application filed May 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, LYMAN JENNINGS, of Winchendon, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Graining and Ornamenting Pails, Tubs, &c.,-of which the fol- My invention consists of tapered printing and inking rolls, and a roller-block for holding the pails, &c., combined and arranged to apply two or more colors to a pail or tub.
lieretofore only one color of ornamental figures has been applied to pails, tubs, and the like by one type-roller with type arranged continuously around it.
I propose to employ two or more type and two or more inking rollers for applying difl'en' ent colors, having the type arranged in sec tions alternating with spaces, and the typesections of one roller acting on the pail or tub in the spaces left uncolored by the spaces of another roller.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved machine, taken on the line a; w of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre' sponding parts.
A represents the block or roller on which. the tub or pail to be grained or otherwise ornamented is placed. B and O represent-two printing, or tubs; for applying or otherwise ornaln'enting the pails and D E represent inking-rollers,
the ink to the type-rollers. The typerollers have type portions F and vacant spaces G, and they are so geared by a wheel, H, which also turns the block A when printing the pails, that the type of one roller prints in the spaces left by the spaces of the other roller, and the inking-rollers have inks of different colors, which are thus applied to the pails'in alternate order, when two printing-rollers are used.
By the same plan three or more printingrollers may be employed.
The type-rollers are mounted on the sliding support I, to move forward and backward between the inking-rollers and the pail-carrying block to get the ink and apply it to the pails. They are moved in one direction by the spring J, and in the other by the treadle K and rope L.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a machine for graining pails, &c., the combination of two or more type-rollers, and two or more inking-rollers, with the block or roller for carrying the pails and tubs, the typerollers being arranged for alternate action, to print two or more colors, substantially as hereinbefore described.
LYMAN JENNINGS.
