FFICEs arnnr NELSON W. MARSHALL, OF COFFEE, INDIANA.
NOSE-RING FOR HOGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,717, dated February 12, 1901.
Application filed September 22, 1900- Serial No. 30,772. (No model.)
To (0Z5 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON W. ll/IARSHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coffee, in the county of Clay and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nose-Rings for Hogs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and improved nose-ring for hogs, and is embodied in the novel construction, arrangement, and com bination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly set forth in the claims.
It is one object of the invention to produce a nose-ring which will be exceedingly simple in construction and one which can be quickly applied to the hogs nose.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the device that it will be especially efficient in preventing the hog from rooting, and to this end the ring is made up of two parts hinged or linked together in such a manner that the parts will have a certain play, sufficient to pinch the nose.
A further object is to provide a ring having two parts movably connected together, the parts having roughened or uneven surfaces adapted to bear against and pinch the hogs nose.
A further object is to construct the device of two pieces of wire looped to form links, twisted shank portions, and hooked engaging portions or prongs for securing the same to the hogs snout.
The invention has for its further object to provide a generally improved, simplified, and cfficient nose-ring for hogs.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a nose-ring embodying my invention, showing the same applied to a hogs nose. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the ring before its application to the hogs nose.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawings a practical embodiment of the invention, I desire it to be understood that the invention is not limited in its useful applications to the particular construction which for the sake of illustration I have there delineated.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the nose-ring as a whole and which, as will be seen, is made up of two parts B and C, movably connected or hinged together, each part being provided with n1eanssuch, for instauce,as hooks or prongs D which are adapted to be inserted and clenched in a hogs nose by means of a suitable tool in a well-unden stood manner. When applied to the hogs nose, as shown in the drawings, the shank por tions of the two parts of the ring, indicated as E, will extend across the front or end of the hogs snout from nostril to nostril in position to bear against the snout and effectually prevent the. hog rooting. It Will be understood that should the hog attempt to root with the side of his snout for the purpose of relieving the shank from pressure the shank Will, by reason of its being constructed of two parts hinged together, bend or buckle, thereby pinching the nose.
It will be observed that the two parts of the ring are constructed of wire, each wire part being bent to form the hinged loops or links, the twisted or roughened shank portions, and the engaging hooks or prongs, thus prod ncing an exceedingly simple, cheap, and durable nose-ring.
If found necessary, the shank portion after having been twisted can be soldered to prevent any possibility of the untwisting of the shank portion, thereby insuring greater strength and durability; but it will be understood that it is not essential that the twisted portions be soldered.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A nose-ring, comprising two members pivotally connected together, and means of attachment on each of said members, substantially as described.
A nose-ring, comprising two parts each consisting of a piece of wire bent to form uneven portions and engaging links at one end thereof for pivotall connecting the parts together, and prongs at the opposite end thereof, substantially as and-for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NELSON WV. MARSHALL.
