To all whomit may concern Be it known that I, CURTIs C. HARLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Walter, in the county of Cotton and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cow-Yokes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in cow yokes and has for its primary object a simple, durable and efficient construction of a device of this character, parts of which may be very cheaply and readily assembled and disassembled and of such construction that they may be reversed, either half or section of the device being disposed lowermost.
A further object of the invention is an improved cow yoke provided with a novel formation of its extremities whereby the animal will be prevented from turning her head sidewise and thus being able to pass through a Wire fence or the like as is possible with the ordinary yoke having single prongs at its end.
The invention also aims to generally improve devices of this character so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
For a further understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my device. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a side view thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in all of the views of the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
My improved cow yoke embodies two complemental or corresponding sections designed to encircle the animals neck, both sections being identical in formation, except in one point as hereinafter referred to. Each section comprises a bar 1 which is formed at. one end with an aperture 2 extending transversely therethrough and near said end and spaced from the aperture '2 is a second aperture designated 3 for the purposes of distinction. Each section also includes a yoke member 4 which is preferably composed of a metallic rod doubled upon itself intermediate of its ends after being passed through the aperture 3 to form a base portion 5 which extends closely along the opposite side faces of the bar 1 and the apertured extremity thereof and then branches outwardly to form the two laterally spaced arms of the yoke member. The extremities of the arms and one of the yoke members 4 are both provided with eyes 6, one of saideyes interlocking with a similar eye 7 on the other yoke member, and the last named member has its other extremity turned outwardly to form a lateral projection 8 which is adapted to extend through the eye of the first named member and be held therein by a nut or cottor pin 9 or similar fastening device. In this respect only are the two sections of the members of the yoke difl'erent and this is the point referred to at the outset of the specification. It will be understood that by springing the lateral extension 8 inwardly it may be released from its eye so that the device may be opened and caused to encircle the neck of the cow after which the parts may be again readily secured together in assembled relation and it will also be understood that by making the parts of corresponding formation, it does not matter how they are disposed when in operative position. Either one may be extended downwardly and the other upwardly. The piercing member of each part of the yoke is also preferably composed of a metallic rod which passes through the end aperture 2 in the bar 1 and is then coiled one or more times around the branching portions of the yoke member 4, as indicated at 10, whereby the piercing member will serve the additional function of securing the yoke member and the bar 1 together. The ends of the piercing member which is designated 11 preferably extend parallel to each other and are suitably sharpened as shown.
The relatively free end of each member 1 is provided with a laterally turned prong or divided extremity 12 the members of which are preferably projected equally away from each other on opposite sides of the bar. This forked or divided prong is one of the important features of my device for by having the extremities of the bars 1 thus formed, the cow will not be permitted to turn her head sidewise and thus put the yoke temporarily out of service as the forked prong will prevent that, whereas that is possible with a single prongor laterally turned extremity at the free ends of the yoke bars.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my improved cow yoke will be apparent. In the practical use of the device, the laterally extended end 8 of the one yoke member 4 is sprung inwardly out of its eye and the yoke members thus opened sothat they may be caused to encircle the neck of the animal with either bar 1 extending downward and the other upward, andthe laterally extending end 8 is then inserted'back into place in its eye and secured therein by any desired form of fastening device. When thus applied, it will'be understood that the piercing member 11 will be. disposed rearward and the forked prong forward, and any attempt on the part of the animal to pass through a fence, will be frustrated by the forwardly turned forked prongs 12 which will engage with the line wires for example and thus cause the piercing member 11 to penetrate the hide and cause suflicient discomfort to make the animal turn back. It will also be understood that the device will prevent the animal from jumping over a fence or from getting underneath a; fence. If the'cow should start to jump over the fence the lowermost prong will catch on the top wire and prevent the attempt and when the animal endeavors to get underneath the fence the upper prong or hook will engage the bottom wire, both of these attempts being therefore effectually frustrated.
While the accompanying drawing illustrates what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention it is tobe understood that my invention is not limited thereto but that various changes in the details of construction and combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
I claim:
1. A cow yoke, comprising separable sections including a bar formed at one end with a prong and at its other end with a transverse aperture and another aperture close to but spaced from the end aperture, a yoke member extending through the second named aperture and extending along the bar toward the apertured end thereof, and thence divergingto form neck encircling members, and a piercing member composed of a rod extending through the end aperture of the bar and coiled around the yoke member on opposite sides of the bar, for the purpose specified.
2. A cow yoke, comprising complemental members, each of which consists of a bar provided at one end with a prong and at its other end with a transverse aperture and a second aperture close to but spaced from the first named aperture, a yoke member for each bar, each of said yoke members passing through-the second named apertureof the bar and close along the sides of the latter toward the end aperture, whence the members of the yoke member diverge, one of said yoke members being formed at its extremity with eyes and the other having one extremity provided with an eye interlocking with the other eye and having its other extremity projected laterally for detachable connection with. the other eye of the first named yoke member, and piercing members for each section, said piercing members consisting of rods passed through the end apertures of the bar and coiled around the yoke members on opposite sides of the bars.
