CALF-WEANER.

To all whom it may concern:

Jr., citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CalflVeaners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to calf weaners and has for its object the provision of a comparatively simple and thoroughly eflicient device of this character which will effectually prevent a calf from sucking, while at the same time permitting the calf to drink or graze without interference.

A further object is to provide a calf weaner including a guard having a nose piecepivotally connected therewith and provided with laterally projecting arms which serve to prevent a calf from extending its tongue over the upper edge of the guard and sucking the teat of a cow.

A further object is to provide means carried by the guard and engaging the nose piece for limiting the upward tilting move ment of said guard.

A still further object is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efiiciency as well as to reduce the cost of. manufacture.

Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for efiecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a calf weaner constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in position on an animal. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the weaner detached. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view showing the manner of tilting the pivoted guard. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of one of the sections of the nose piece detached. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the device.

The device comprises a nose plece including relatively stationary and movable sec tions 5 and 6 pivotally connected at 7 and each provided with an overhanging finger terminating in a rounded portion or knob 8 adapted to engage the nostrils of the animal to which the weaner is applied. The relatively stationary section 5 of the nose piece is provided with a depending eXtension 9 having its free end bifurcated at 10 and adapted to be bent into engagement with a stop rib 11 to form a transverse socket 12 for the reception of the upper bar of a pendent guard indicated at 13. The guard 13 is preferably concavo convex in cross section and is devoid of surface projections thereby to prevent cutting, scratching or otherwise lacerating the nose of the animal. Secured to or formed integral with the upper bar of the guard 13 are spaced lugs 14 which serve to center the nose piece with respect to the guard while at the same time permitting pivotal movement of one relatively to the other. Projecting laterally from opposite sides of the extension 9 are longitudinally disposed ears 15 adapted to bear against the lugs 14 on the guard for the purpose of limiting the upward tilting movement thereof, such a construction permitting the guard to be swung upwardly to allow the calf to drink or graze while at the same time preventing the guard from being swung to a position above the animals nose and thus allowing the animal to grasp the teat of a cow.

Projecting from the sections 5 and 6 of the nose piece are laterally extending arms 16 preferably in the form of loops curved to conform to the shape of the guard 13, and which extend above and in spaced relation to the upper bar of said guard so as to prevent a calf from extending the tongue over the upper edge of the bar of said guard in an endeavor to grasp the teat of a cow.

The nose piece and arms 16 are slightly concavo convex so as to conform to the shape of the animals nose, while the arms 16 are preferably provided with rounded edges to prevent injury to the animal.

As a means for locking the sections 5 and 6 in closed position there is provided a cotter pin 17 which latter extends through alined openings 18 formed in the sections of the nose piece, as shown.

The guard 13 may be solid and of any desired configuration but it is preferred. to make the same in the form of a substantially elliptical frame having intersecting horizontal and vertical strengthening ribs 19.

In applying the device the cotter pin is removed and the sections 5 and 6 pressed downwardly so as to space the knobs .8 and thus permit said knobs to be readily inserted in the nostrils of the animal, the nose piece being retained in position on the nose of the animal by inserting the cotter pin in the openings provided for that purpose. Then the device is in position on an animal the guard 13 is suspended in front of the mouth of the animal so as to prevent the calf from grasping the teat of a cow, while at the same time permitting the guard to be swung upwardly when the animal is drinking or grazing, the upward swing or tilting movement of the guard being limited by engagement of the lugs 14 with the stop ears 15 on the nose piece in the manner before stated.

The calf weaners may be made in different sizes and shapes and may be nickled, galvanized, or otherwise coated so as to protect the same from the elements.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A calf weaner including a nose piece formed of relatively stationary and movable sections, one of which is provided with a depending extension having a socket formed therein, there being longitudinal ears on the stationary section of the nose piece and disposed on opposite sides of said extension, a guard pivotally mounted in the socket and provided with spaced lugs disposed on opposite sides of the socket and adapted to engage the ears of the nose piece for limiting the upward tilting movement of the guard, and laterally extending loops forming a part of the nose piece and disposed in spaced relation to the adjacent edge of the guard.

2. A calf weaner including a nose piece formed of relatively movable and stationary sections, the movable section being provided with a longitudinal stop rib and a depend ing extension, the end of which is bifurcated and bent upon itself into engagement with the stop rib to form a socket, there being ears depending from the stationary section at the opposite ends of the stop rib, a guard pivotally mounted in said socket, and lugs formed on the guard on opposite sides of the socket and adapted to engage theears for limiting the upward tilting movement of said guard.
