CHARLES E. PENMAN, OF HAZLETON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO HARVEY D. LAMONT, OF HAZLETON, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOOK AND EYE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,372, dated December 8, 1903.
I Application filed March 4, 1903. Serial No. 146,206. (No model.)
To on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. PENMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hazleton, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Hook and Eye, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to garment-closures, and especially to that class of devices known as hooks and eyes, and has for its objects to provide a simple and efficient means for attaching such closures to a garment, said means being in the form of an attaching member provided with pins for the engagement of the material and with a stud to which the closure is removably engaged, thus providing for the ready attachment of the device to the garment or its removal therefrom and obviating sewing of the parts.
To these ends the invention comprises the details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hook having my improved attaching device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view of an eye provided with myimproved attaching means, the parts being disassembled. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sectional elevation illustrating the hook and eye applied to the respective flaps of a garment and in engagem ent with each other for closing the same. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the hook member. of a garment-closure adapted to be attached to one flap of a garment and to engage, as usual, an eye member 2 of the closure attached to the other flap of the garment.
In accordance with my invention the respective members of the garment-closure are attached to the material by means of an at.- taching member 3, having arms or pins 4, which engage the material of the garment, and with eyes 5 of the respective members of the closure when in position on the attaching member, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The attaching member is provided with a stud 6, enlarged at its outer end to form lateral recesses 6, which stud engages an eye 7, formed in the shank of each of the members 1 and 2, whereby said members are securely but removably connected with the attaching member.
The attaching member 3 is preferably formed from a single length of wire bent at its center to form acentraltongue 8 and then has its free ends bent outward and backward in parallel relation to form the pins 4, which are sharpened at their extremities for ready insertion through the material of a garment. The stud 6 is formed by bending the end of the tongue upward at right angles, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4..
The eye member 2 is preferably formed from a single length of wire bent at its center to form the eye, which is engaged by the hook membeiy and is further bent to form the central eye 7, which engages with the stud 6 of the attaching member, then continues in parallel relation for a short distance and finally has its respective ends bent at right angles to the shank or body portion of the member and into the form of eyes 5, in which the pins 4 engage when the parts are in the position illustrated in Fig. 2.
The hook member 1 is preferably formed from a single length of wire bent at its center to lie in close parallel relation for a suitable distance, then bent to form the eye 7, which engages with the stud 6, as described in connection with the member 2, thence in parallel relation for a short distance, and finally has its respective ends bent at right angles to the shank or body portion of the member and then into the form of eyes 5, with which the pins 4. engage when the parts are in the position illustrated in Fig. 1. The doubled portion of the wire distant from the eyes 5 is folded back upon itself to form the usual hook for engagement with the eye of the member 2, and in this connection it is to be noted that when the members are so engaged one with the other the stud 6, projecting upward through the eye 7 of the member 1, forms a stop or abutment which prevents accidental escape of the eye member 2 from the hook.
In assembling the parts the pins 4. of the attaching member are first inserted through the material of the garment. The eyes 5 of the closure member 1 or 2, as the case may be, are engaged With the ends of the pins, and the central eye 7 of the member is snapped over the enlarged end of the stud 6 into engagement with the recesses 6. To remove the closure member from the garment is a mere reversal of the above steps.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I produce a simple and efficient device for attaching closure members to garments, and While I believe that the form of device herein described is the best adapted for the attainment of the ends in view it is to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the details of construction herein set forth,
inasmuch as various changesmay be made therein without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination With an attaching member having pins for removable engagement with the material of a garment, of a garment closure member having eyes to receive the ends of the pins, and a stud associated with one of said members for engagement with an eye formed in the other.
2. In a device of the class described, the
combination with an attaching member having pins adapted for engagement with the material of a garment, of a stud associated therewith, and a garment-closure formed for engagement with the stud and having eyes to receive the ends of the pins.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with an attaching member having pins adapted for engagement with the material of a garment, of a stud formed on said member, and a garment-closure having an eye for engagement With the stud and eyes to receive the ends of the pins.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with an attaching member comprising a single length of wire bent to form a central tongue and pins adapted for engagement with the material of a garment, of a stud formed by bending upward the end of the tongue, and a garment-closure having an eye for engagement with the stud and eyes to receive the ends of the pins.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my ownI have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES E. PENMAN.
