NITED STATES PATENT UFFICE.
LEO OAUFFMAN, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
TROUSERS-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,010, dated December 4, 1900.
Application filed December 8,1898- Serial No. 698,655. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEO OAUFFMAN,of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers-Guards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
The object of my present invention is to provide a trousers-holding device adapted to be applied to trousers for bicyclists wear which shall be light, simple, and conveniently operated by the wearer to hold the trouserslegs and protect the same from becoming soiled or otherwise harmed while riding a bicycle and which may be worn continuously and operated or released as desired.
Myinvention further consists in certain improvements in construction and combinations of parts, all as will be clearly described and the-novel features pointed out in the claim at the end of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure'l is a side elevation showing the lower end of the trousers-leg containing my invention; Fig. 2, a cross-sectional view on the line mm of Fig; 1, showing the operation of myinvention to secure the trousersleg; Fig. 3, a rear view of the strip of material forming the front of the trousers-leg; Fig. 4, a sectional view on the line y y of Fig. 3, showing the parts disengaged and in their normal position.
Similar reference-numerals indicate similar parts.
In embodying my invention in a practical form I apply to the inner side of the trouserslegs 1 tabs or ears 2, formed upon or attached to the portion 3 left at the edge of the seams of the trousers-legs after stitching at 4 and 5. The tabs or ears are arranged opposite each other and upon 'the inside of each trousersleg and provided vwith catch devices, consisting in the present embodiment of the wellknown form of ball-and-socket fastener or snap, embodying the male member 7 and the female member 8, one of each of the members being secured to each tab, and to give the latter sufficient strength with the minimum amount of material I employ a backing 6, of stout material, such as canvas or leather, ap-
trousers-leg by making provision in the pattern and forming the said tabs when cutting the goods, whereby they will come upon the inside of the trousers-leg in the correct position, as shown, when the trousers are completed. In this way the tabs are always positioned directly opposite each other in the making up of the trousers, and I am enabled I to do away with the inconvenience resulting by workmen inaccurately applying the tabs, and I am also enabled to provide a neater and lighter means of securing the trousers tightly around the ankle than can be accomplished when the tabs or ears are formed from separate pieces and afterward applied to the finished article.
It will be readily understood that when the wearer desires to secure his trousers about the ankles he simply engages the parts of the fasteners together by inserting the ball on one of the members within the socket in the other, which may be accomplished either by turning up the bottom of the trousers-leg in order to reach the ears 2 with the fingers or by feeling upon the outside of the goods, with the fingers properly positioning and engaging the parts of the fastener, as shown in Fig. 2, in which position they will remain until the wearer parts the fastener by separating the goods and allowing the trousers to assume their normal shape.
A further advantage is secured in having the members of the fastener on the tabs which are provided upon the inner side of the trousers-leg and to the portion 3 of the goods extending forward from the seams 4 and 5, and the ears being loose at the front edge will permit the trousers to hang more nearly in the normal position, and the connection between the sides will be less apparent than if fastener members were secured directly to the sides.
the forward sides of the seams, and the detachable ball-and-socket fastening devices between said tabs, one member being secured to each tab.
LEO OAUFFMAN.
