UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFrcE.
FRANK M. KLING, OF CAIRO, ILLINOIS.
EXTENSION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,852, dated October 2, 1900.
Application filed April 5, 1900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, FRANK M. KLING, acitizen of the United States, residing at Cairo, in the county of Alexander and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in extension-tables; and its primary object is to provide adevice of this character which is simple in construction, light, durable, and cheap to manufacture.
To this end the invention consists in th novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is'a perspective view of the device extended. Fig. 2is a bottom plan view of the table closed. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on line4 4, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a supporting-arm and its bracket. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the stri pguides, and Fig. 7 is a transverse seclion through the bracket and its supportingarm.
Referring to said figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a standard, preferably of castiron or other metals and of any desired shape. This standard is provided with a suitable number (preferably four) of hollow extensions 2 at points between the ends thereof. An annular flange 3 is provided at the topof' the standard, and this is secured in any suitable manner to a cross-beam 4, which extends transversely of the table. Secured to the under surface of this beam, near each end thereof, is a strap 5, formed, preferably, of sheet metal and secured thereto in'any desired manner. This strap is bent downward, as shown, forming two rectangular loops 6, eachof which is adapted to receive one of the longitudinal] y-extending strips of the movable top of the table.
The movable sections of the top of the table are similar in construction and comprise the top boards 7 and 8, each of which is secured to side strips 9 and 10, respectively, the side strips of one half of the top fitting snugly against the side faces of the corresponding strips of the second half.
Serial No. 11580 (No model.)
Secured to one of the strips 9, at both ends thereof, are connecting-pieces 11, which are secured at their opposite ends to a strip 12, which is slidably mounted in the outer rectangular loop 6 of the strap 5, secured adjacent thereto. The opposite strip 9 is secured at one end to a similar longitudinal strip 13 by means of a connecting-plate 14, which extends under the adjacent side strip 10 and its parallel strip 12, which is arranged and mounted similar to the strip 12, hereinbefore described. The strip 13 is slidably mounted within the innermost loop 6 of the strap 5 adjacent thereto. The opposite side piece 10 of the top 8 is secured to an inner strip 13 in a similar manner, said strip being slidable within an inner loop 6 and connected to the side strip 10 by means of a plate 14, which extends under the adjacent strips of the top 7.
Slidably mounted upon each strip 12 and 13 is a bracket 15, as shown in Fig. 7, to
' which is pivotally mounted an arm 16, which extends downward to and is secured within one of the projections 2 of the standard 1. These arms are stationary in relation to the standard and serve as supports for the tops.
The operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing description.
' It will be seen that when the tops 7 and 8 are drawn apart the strips 12 and 13 thereof will slide within the loops 6 and the brackets 15.
It will be seen that the minimum amount of bearing-surface is employed in this device, and therefore the same may be easily extended, or closed.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an extension-table the combination with a standard, of a crossbeam mounted thereon, arms projecting therefrom, guides secured to the cross-beam, brackets secured to the arms, tops, and strips to said tops,
] oted upon the arms, a cross-beam mounted upon the standard, guides secured thereto, tops, and parallel sets of strips to said tops slidably mounted within the guides and brackets.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK M. KLING.
