. whereby the length of said stand may be longitudinally adjustable to accommodate a row of books for example.
It is the further object of this invention to provide a lcentral swivel element upon the' base of said stand, with said swivel element having a pair of oppositely arranged platform elements which are longitudinally and reciprocably ad- :justable with respect to each other for regulating the length of said platform.
It is the further object of this invention to provide in said swivel element a manually adjustable memberwhich isoperatively engagable with both of said platform elements whereby on operation of said manually adjustable member said platform elements may be horizontally moved towards or away. from each other upon said swivel element. 1
It is the still further object of this invention to provide rack gears in `association with said platform elements and movable therewith, being oppositely arranged with respect to each other and with the manually adjustable member carrying a pinion which i-s in mesh with both of said rack gears.
These and other objects will be seen from the following specification and claim in conjunction with the appended drawings in which:
Figure l is a side elevational view of the swivel stand.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a left end elevational view thereof.
Figure 4 is an elevational section on lin-e 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is an elevational section on line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary elevational section'. on line 6-6 of Figure 1; and
Figure '1 is a fragmentary eleva-tional section on line 1--1 of Figure 4.Y
It will be understood that the above drawings' illustrate merely a preferred embodiment of the invention, and lthat other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the claim hereafter` set out.
Referring to the drawings,V the swivel stand consists of the circular stationary base II which has formed therein a central. circular recess I2 in its top surface as shown in Figures 4 and 5.
Substantially cylindrical swivel I3 is uprightly positioned within circular slot I2 which acts as a guide therefor, permitting manual 360 degree rotation thereof relative to base I I.
Rivet or bolt I4 extends downwardly from the bottom of central transverse slot I5 formed in swivel I3, and down through a corresponding central opening in baseV II, in suchA manner as to loosely retain saidv swivel Within the guide recess I2in saidbase. A
Longitudinally adjustable platform elements I6 and I1 are horizontally positioned upon the top surface of swivel Z13, platform element I6 having a pair of longitudinal dove-tail slots 20 formed in the inner surfaces ofits bifurcated elements I9, to cooperatively and guidingly receive the longitudinally arranged outwardly extending tongues I8 formed in the opposite side edges of platform element I 1.
Thus platform elements I6 and I1 are positioned in the same horizontal plane, however platform I6 has a central opening or longitudinal slot 2I within which platform I1 is adjustably movable respectively; At the Asame time said slots 20 provide a means of horizontally retaining platform I1 upon the top surface of swivel I3.
Rotatable shaft 22 is transversely jouirnalled through swivel I3 and centrally through its slot I5, having the handle 23 secured thereto at its outer end for rotating the same in one direction or the other. A pinion 24 is suitably secured upon shaft 22 within slot I5 in swivel I3 with suitable spacing washers 25 being provided upon shaft 22 upon opposite sides of said pinion.
A rack gear 26 depends downwardly from platform I1 being secured thereto for longitudinal reciprocal movements within slot I5, and with its teeth projecting downwardly and in mesh with the teeth of manually rotatable pinion 24.
A second oppositely arranged rack gear 21 is also positioned within the lower portion of slot I5 with its teeth extending upwardly in spaced relation to the teeth of rack gear 26, and being also in mesh with the teeth of pinion 24.
The forward end of rack gear 21 is interconnected with platform I6 by means of the intermediate blcck 28 whereby rack gear 21 lies in parallel spaced relation to the under surface of platform I6.
As both rack gears 26 and 21 are in operative mesh with pinion 24 upon opposite sides thereof,

ed for respective engagement with cross-bars 32J and 33 secured respectively to platform elements;

Detent means 43 are pivotally mounted upon the lower portions of bifurcated elements 4I within central slots 44 to normally prevent the upward removal of bifurcations 4 I, but which may be manually tilted inwardly within slots 44 whereby said bifurcated element 40 may be removed from the respective platforms if desired.
