. 'U TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GILES H. GRISWOLD, OF TENNESSEE, AND SAMUEL GRISWOLD, OF CAMP POINT, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED BOOKCASE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GILES H. GRISWOLD and SAMUEL GmswoLo, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Tennessee and Camp Point, in the counties of McDonough and Adams and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Bookcases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined table and book case, and the object of the invention is to provide the interior of a table with a rotatable member divided into sections adapted for the reception of books, papers and the like. The side of the table being provided with suitable doors, whereby access to the book case is obtained, and the case readily revolved upon a suitable axle whereby the desired book may be obtained from any of the sections of the case.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined book case and table with a center post having ears adapted for the reception of the legs of the table, the post being provided with a suitable cap whereby the legs are securely retained upon the post.
lVith these and other objects in view the intention resides in the novel construction of parts and their arrangement in operative combination, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a combined table and book case constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the center post employed with our invention. Fig. 1 is a horizontal sectional view upon the line 4-ft of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view upon the line 55 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a similar view upon the line 6 6 of Fig. 2, the sides of the table being removed.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates a table constructed in accordance with our invention. The table is preferably of a cylindrical construction, having a top 2 provided with depending sides 3. The sides of the table are also cylindrical in cross section, and are provided with a suitable cut away portion adapted for the reception of hinged doors 1, whereby access to the interior of the table is obtained. The top 2 of the table is provided upon its inner surface with a suitable bear- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing plate 5, provided with a cylindrical raceway adapted for the reception of anti-frictional metal balls provided upon the upper face of a collar (5. This collar (5 is provided with a central cylindrical raceway, and has its outer face provided with a series of outwardly extending ears, radiating from the center and suitably spaced apart so as to provide a plurality of compartments adapted for the reception of walls 8 comprising the sections of the book case. The co1upartrnents provided upon the sleeve or collar (3, are provided with top and bottom walls I) and 10. The bottom wall 10 of the sleeve is provided with a series of perforations adapted for the reception of retaining elements, whereby a base is secured to the sleeve and to the walls 8 of the book case. One of the compartments provided by the walls 8 may be divided into sections, each comprising a separate compartment adapted for the reception of letters, etc.
The base 11 of the book case is provided with a suitable bearing plate 12, having a cylindrical raceway adapted for the reception of anti-frictional balls provided between the plate and a similar raceway upon the top of a center post 13. The post 13 is provided with a head 14:, having a. series of slots or opening 15, adapted for the reception of a plurality of arms 16, the outer ends of which are adapted for engagement with the sides 3 of the table, and provide a substantial support for the table top. The center post 13 is also provided with a downwardly extending portion 17. This extension 17 is provided with a plurality of outwardly extending ears 18, running in a vertical direction with the extension 17 The ears 18 are inclined toward each other, and are arranged in pairs to provide a suitable dove-tailed recess adapted for the reception of a dovetailed projection 19 provided upon the legs 20 of the table. The center post 13 is provided with a centrally arranged sleeve 21, adapted to aline with the hollow collar 6 and with openings provided within the base 11 and the bearing plate 12. Positioned within these openings is a shaft 22, upon which the collar 6 provided with the sectional book case is adapted to revolve. The extension 17 of the center post is substantially hollow in cross section and is adapted for the reception of a suitable cap 22, by which the legs 20 are securely retained in position upon the ears provided by the center post. The extension 17 may be provided with threaded extensions 23 adapted for engagement with suitable perforations provided with the cap 22, and the cap and center post be securely retained in engagement with each other by suitable nuts 24: engaging the threaded extensions of the center post.
From the above description it will be seen that we have provided a substantial book case for an ordinary round table, one in which access to the books arranged in the compartments may be easily obtained. The structure being substantial and the device readily used as an ordinary table when desired.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
In a combination table and book case, a central member provided with a head having a plurality of openings and a reduced hollow sleeve, a top having a central socket and a depending flange or side, doors upon the side, radiating arms engaging the openings of the central member and the side or flange of the top, legs connecting with the depending sleeve, a cap provided with a central socket for the sleeve of the central member, a shaft engaging the socket of the head and the socket of the cap, a collar upon the shaft between the central member and the top, and a series of partitions provided with a floor secured to and radiating from the collar.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
