HENRY O. PAUL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK HILBIG, OF SAME PLACE.
MATCH-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,393, dated. September 25, 1900. I
Application filed October 5, 1399- Serial No. 732,637. (No model.)
To rtZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I HENRY 0. PAUL, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to match-boxes; and
I0 it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure l is a perspective view of my complete invention, showing the lid or cover open.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the lid or cover open. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the box inverted with the lid or cover of the toothpick-receptacle open. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of my complete invention.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal cross-sectional view on the line a a of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the box with the lid or cover removed.
I construct a match-box of the class as shown with a body 1, composed of thin, light, and durable material and divided into two compartments 2 and 3, varying in size. At the top of the body 1 I provide a lid or cover 4, which is secured thereto by a hinge 5. To
0 the bottom 6 at one edge I provide acover 7, which is suitably hinged in any desirable manner to the body 1. \Vithin the lid or cover 4, at one side and secured to its inner surface, is a knife-blade 8, arranged so that when the lid or cover 4 is closed it will pass between two vertical ears 9, each provided with an aperture 10, through which the tip of a cigar is to be passed and cut off by means of said knife 8 when said lid or cover 4 is closed upon the same. Within said cover, adjacent the knife 8, I provide a semicircular recess 11, which is somewhat larger in diameter than the apertures 10 and is to allow the cigar to pass therein while the tip is being 5 cut off, thus preventing the side of said cover from mutilating said cigar.
The ears 9 are mounted upon a horizontal wall 12, which also acts as the bottom of the toothpick-receptacle 2. Said ears 9 project freely such a distance above the upper marginal edge of the body 1 that their apertures 10 are located entirely above said marginal edge. Integral with the case 1 and located at the rear a short distance beneath the hinge 5 of the cover 4 are ears 13, between which is held, by means of a pin 14, a corkscrew 15, which is arranged so that the point 16 of said corkscrew rests upon the edge of the body 1 when the same is in a folded position and is prevented while the same is in said position from coming in contact with the clothes of the user by means of a projection 17, forming a part of the body 1.
The hinge 5 of the cover 4 is provided with a spring 18, designed to support the lid when closed or in its open position.
It will be observed by referring to Figs. 1 and 6 that the ears 9 are arranged but a short distance apart, thus providing a space between the same of sufiicient size for the insertion of the knife-blade 8. The aperture in the inner ear is so arranged as to retain the tip after the same has been cut off, the object of this being to prevent the tip from falling within the match-receptacle when the box is placed within the pocket. When it is desired to clip the end of another cigar, the tip which is being held by the inner ear is then forced from its position by the insertion of the end of the cigar to be clipped and will fall from its position away from the match-' receptacle on account of the upper flat surface of the horizontal wall 12. The lid or cover 7 is also governed by a spring similar to the spring 18, governing the lid or cover 4. 8
Within the receptacle 2 I place toothpicks, and within the receptacle 3 the matches are placed, and access can be had to the receptacle 3 only by opening the lid or cover 4 and to receptacle 2 only by opening the lid or 0 cover 7.
I claim The improved pocket match-box comprising the body 1, the pair of vertical ears 9 having the two alined apertures 10 and pro- 5 jecting freely such a distance above the upper marginal edge of said body that the said apertures 10 are located entirely above said marginal edge, the cover 4 provided with semicircular recesses 11, and a knife 8 carried by said cover, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY 0. PAUL.
