Be it known that we, RICHARD WILLIAM LEVY and JOSEPH HOLT,citiZens ofthe United States, and residents of Paterson, in the count-y of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Convertible Tub, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

One purpose of the invention is to provide a construction of tub which may be equally serviceable as a washtub or as a bath-tub, the change in form being effected by the removal of one section Vand the substitution ot another.

Another purpose of the invention is to provide a simple and effective means for locking the sections together and for obtaining a water-tight connection between the sections.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding partsin all the iigures.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the tub arranged for bath purposes and a perspective view of the removed section. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the tub adapted for washing purposes; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section through a portion of the tub shown in Fig. 2, illustrating the manner in which the bottom of the main section connects in a water-tight manner with the removable section of such tub.

A represents an ordinaryT Washtub, with the exception that the upright portion ot' the tub is made in two sections-a main section 10 and a smaller section 11. Vhen these two sections are brought together and properly fastened in place, the tub A presents practically the same appearance as a portable washtub of ordinary type. The bottom 12 of the tub is secured to the main section 10, and the minor or smaller section 11 is provided with a groove 1/1 in its inner face, which would ordinarily directly receive a portion of the periphery of the bottom 12; but as shown in Fig. 3 this groove has a rubber or other elastic packing 13 introduced therein, so that when the two sections 10 and 11 of the tub are brought together thesection 11, through the medium of said packing 13, will have a water-tight connection with the bottom, and in order that this minor section 11 may have also a water-tight connection at its sides with the main section 10 of the tub the side edges of the minor section have rubber or other elastic material secured thereto in any suitable manner, which rubber strips constitute washers 15 when the two sections of the tub are brought together.

The minor section 11 of the washtub A is provided at each end with a strap 16, secured by rivets or otherwise on its exterior surface. These straps extend beyond the ends of the section 11 and terminate beyond the said ends ineyes 17. Similar straps 18 are secured to the outer face of the upright portion of the Amain section 10 of the tub at its ends, and

these straps 18 likewise terminate at their outer portions in eyes 19; but preferably the eyes 19 do not extend beyond the ends of the said main section, as shown in `Fig. 1, and the straps on the two sections of the tub A are so located that when the sections are brought together the eyes of the straps on one section will be either beneath or over but in registry with the eyes of the straps on the other section, so that a pin, usually a fiat pin 20, may be passed through the alining eyes at each side ot' the tub, and thus connect the two sections and draw them together, so that the washers of the sections will form a water-tight connection between them.

When the washtub is to be converted int'o a bath-tub, the section 11 of the washtub is removed and an elongated section B is substituted. This elongated section B consists of sides 2l, which diverge at their free ends and curve outward at their free extremities, being connected at their opposite or contracted portions by a member 22, which is usually more or less semicircular, so that when this auxiliary section B is applied to the main section 10 of the tubAthe two sections combined will form a bath-tub of conventional shape.

The auxiliary section Bis provided with a bottom 23, the end whereof at the widerI and open portion of the auxiliary section is concaved or so shaped that it will neatly receive IOO and closely contact with the portion of the bottom l2 of the tub A which'projccts beyond the end portions ot' the main section 10 of the tub, and this inner or exposed end of the bottom 23 is provided with an attached elastic packing 25. The free end portions of the said auxiliary section of the tub are likewise provided with an elastic packing 24, so that when the section B is brought in close relation to the main section lO of the tub A t water-tight joint is provided between them. This connection is effected in like manner as the connections between the two sections 10 and 1l of the tub A-namely, straps 26 are secured to the outer faces of the side portions 21 of the auxiliary section B, which straps 2G extend beyond the ends of the said side pieces 2l and are provided beyond said ends with eyes 27, adapted to register with the eyes 19, carried by the straps 18, which latter straps are secured to the section 10 of the washtub A, and the same character of key or pin 2O described in connection with the sections of the washtub A is employed to connect the extension or auxiliary section B with the main tub-section 10.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A tub, comprising two sections, separable one from the other, a bottom secured to one of the sections and having a segmental portion extended beyond the ends of said section and adapted for engagement with the other section, and means for locking the two sections together, substantially as specified.

2. A tub comprising a main section having an attached bottom, a removable section having a surface provided with a washer and adapted to receive a portion of the main sec'- tion, washers located between the contacting body portions of the two sections, eyes carried by the sections and arranged for registry at each side of the tub when the sections are brought together, and a pin which is rcmovably passed through alining eyes, as set forth.

In a tub, a main semicircular section, a bottom attached to said section and extending beyond the ends of the section, an auxiliary section comprisingr side portions connected at one end, said side portions diverging at their opposite ends, a bottom connecting the side portions of the said auxiliarysection, the free edge of which bottom is shaped to receive the extending portion of the bottom of the main section, elastic and waterproof washers located between the opposing edges of the two sections, and locking devices for the said sections, as set forth.

4. In a tub, a main semicircular section,a bottom attached to said sect-ion and extending beyond the ends of the section, an auxiliary section comprising side portions connected at one end, the said side portions diverging at their opposite ends, a bottom c onnecting the side portions of said auxiliary section, the free edge of which bottom is shaped to receive the extending portion of the bottoni of the main section, elastic and waterproof washers located between the opposing edges of the two sections, straps attached to the outer face of the main section at its ends, said straps terminating in eyes, straps att-ached to the removable section of the tub, which latter straps also terminate in eyes, the eyes of the removable or auxiliary section extending beyond the ends thereof, being arranged to register with the eyes on the main section of the tub, and a fastening device passed through the registering eyes of the several sets of straps, as set forth.
