SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,536, dated April 29, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HARRIET JOHNSON, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tubs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description;

My invention relates to improvements in that class of tubs which are provided with removable partitions.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts,

as will be hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is-a plan view of a tub having my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a 1011- gitudinal vertical section. Fig. 3 is a trans verse section at one side of the partition, said partition being also partially in section; and Figs. 4 and 5 are vertical sections of the partition, illustrating different modes of securing the flexible packing thereto.

It is the prime objectof the present invention to provide a-means whereby the stationary wash-tubs ordinarily employed in connectionwit-h tenement or flat houses may be utilized as a bath-tub when occasion may demand.

In carrying outthe invention the tub 10 may be constructed in any ordinary or approved form, preferably, however, with downwardly and inwardly inclined sides, as illustrated in Fig. 3. If one partition only is to be used in connection with a tub, a recess 12 is produced in the inner face of the sides 11, preferably'at the center and near the top, and if it is desired to provide. a means for regulating the size of the compartments of the tub similarlylocated recesses 13 may be produced at each side of the central recesses 12, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The partition 14 is shaped to the inner contour of the tub, and in the sides and bottom of the said partition a flexible packin g-strip 15 is inserted, which strip preferably consists of rubber.

In introducing the flexible packingstrip 15 into the partition a single continuous strip may be introduced into the central slot formed in the side and bottom edges, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, the outer projecting surface of which strip may be made square or beveled, as shown in Fig. 2, or provided with a V-groove, as illustrated in Fig. 4..

Another means of introducing the flexible packingstrip consists in introducing two strips of material in grooves formed in the side and bottom edges of the partition, as shown in Fig. 5,.in which the grooves are inclined inward, whereby the outer projecting ends of the strips, which are spaced at their inner ends, have an outward inclination.

In the lower edge of the partition, near each side, pins 16 are inserted, which pins are preferably non-ali gnin g and adapted for introduction into suitable apertures 17 in the bottom of the tub, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.

Upon the upper surface of the partition, at each end, a locking device is secured, consistin g of a base-plate 18, secured, preferably by four screws, to the upper edge of the partition longitudinally of the same, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the said plate being provided centrally at the rear with a vertical arched projection 19 and at the outer end, at each side, with vertically projecting transversely aligning lugs 20.

Upon each base-plate 18 a bolt 21 is held to slide, the head of which bolt is of sufficient width to pass conveniently between the lugs 20, the rear end being reduced to pass through the arched projection 19, and the said reduced outer end of the bolt is provided, preferably, with a T-shaped head 22, whereby the bolt is prevented from being detached from the base plate, yet permitted to slide freely thereon. The bolt at or near the center is provided with a threaded aperture, in which a thumb-screw 23 is entered, which thumb-screw is swiveled upon the bolt to prevent its entire withdrawal therefrom.

In operation the pins 10 of the partition 14 are made to enter the desired apertures 17 of the tub, and the bolts 21 are slid outward until the heads thereof enter the transversely= aligning

12 or 13 of the tub, accord ing to the desired location of the partition. \Vhen the bolts have been thus entered into the recesses, the thu1nb-screws 23 are screwed downward to a bearing upon the base-plate 18, which act-ion causes the head of each bolt to bear against the upper wall of the tub-recess in which it is entered, and at the same time the movement of the thumb-screws forces the partition downward, causing the flexible packing 15 to bind firmly against the sides and bottom of the tub, thereby rendering the partition absolutely water-proof.

It is obvious that if the tub is to be used for bathing purposes by loosening or u nscrewing the thumb-screws 23 the bolts 21 may be slid back upon the partition and the said partition may be quickly removed from the tub, thereby throwing the same open from end to end.

In making this improvement in Wash-tubs I aim to provide a means whereby families living in tenement-houses that do notcontain. a regular bath-tub may expeditiously and conveniently convert the wash-tubs into a bath tub, and wherein, also, where bath-tubs are provided, the wash-tubs in the house may be utilized as bath-tubs for the use of servants.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the tub having bolt-recesses in its opposite sides, of a partition provided with looking devices, each com-- prising a base-plate 18, having an arched projection or eye 19 at its inner end, and side lugs 20, the bolt between the lugs and passing at its rear ends through said projection or eye, and the set-screw passing through the bolt and bearing at its inner end against the base-plate, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, witha tub provided with aligning side recesses near the top, of a detachable partition, flexible washers introduced into the sides and bottom of the partition, bolts held to slide upon the upper surface of the partition, capable of entering the tub-recesses, and a set-screw located in the bolt, capable of depressing the partition when the bolts are in the locked position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
