GYRUS CLAY, OF SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 65,543', dated' June 11, 1867.
IMPROVED BOOTJAGK.
dige Sdgihiiic rrfemh tu in lgrss tcttns nteut mit uniting nant nf tlgc sume.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN; Be it known that I, CYRUS CJAY, of Scranton, in the county ot' Luzerne, State .of' Pennsylvania, have invented certain new 'and useful improvements in Boot-Jacks; and the -following is fa full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part oi' this specification, in Whieh- I Figure 1 represents a side view of thejack, with a boot held in position at both heel and toe for drawing et?. Figure 2 shows a topview of the boot-jaclibail and toe support, with the handle breken oif. The object oi' my invention is to supportboth the heel and toc ot' the boot in a stationary posit-ion while drawing the foot from it; and consists in a cast-metal cup, with a socket in which to iit'a long handle, the cup and socket being in the form of a ladle, the same being connected by a wire bail with the prongs of a metal boot-jack of the ordinary form and construction.
`To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawings and the letters marked thereon. A
My improved boot-jack A. may be of cast metal -of any ornamental design, the prongs a a being elevated to a proper height to grasp the heel of'the boot B, by one or more projections I). To the ends of the prongs aa, a wire of suitable size and length `is hinged, it forming a bail passing through the upper portion of the socket c with handle d, so that when the heel of the boot is placed between the prongs a a, the concave cup or ladleC is easily placed on the toe of the boot, 'the handle d extending up a sufficient distance to be used conveniently, it forming a lever, the bail e e being the fulcrum to hold the boot firmly in the jack, while it is a support to steady the person while in .the actef' drawing oil' his boots.
It is well known that it is no easy matter to draw olf well-fitting boots, and that n. person requires something to steady his body in doing so; thus it will be seen that my improved boobjack, as above described, .m remedy all of the existing diiculty. l
Having thus fully described my inrention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The concave toe-cup c, handle d, and bail e e, as constructed and attached to the prongs a a, in combination with a metallic beet-jack, A, substantially as herein described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name on this 12th day of March, 1867.
' CYRUS' CLAY.
