'ro ALL WHOM 1r MAY conocen.A
Be it known that I, W. H; WINNS, of Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, haveinventcd certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Lifters; an'dl do hereby declare that the following isn. full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making al portion of this specification, in whichi Figure 1 is a back view of' a shoc-liftcrmade according to my invention. Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, taken' at right angles to iig. 1.
' The object of this invention is to provide a means whereby any ditliculty that may arise in drawing gaiters or shoes upon the feet, either from the tightness of the gaitcr or shoe, or by theloss of therstraps thereof, may
be very eii'ectually and conveniently obviated.
The invention consists in the combination of a lever-plate, griping-plate, and holding-lever, whereby an implement is formed especially adapted to the-purpose mentioned.
The invention further consists in certain Vnovel means whereby the convenience with which thoimplement may be applied for use, andthe tenacity ofits hold upon'the shoe or gaiter, is materially increased.
To enable others to understandV the construction and operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe. it withI reference to the drawings.
v A represents an oblong metal plate, the upper part, a, of which is narrowed and bent back to form a lever or handle, and the lower part, b, of which, taken transversely, is made wider, and is concave in 'its front or outer surface, and convex at its back. Pivoted to the back of this plate A, as shown at ai, and near the centre thereof, is a. smallerplate, B, also made concave-convex in itsA cross-section, to correspond, as near as may be, with the form of the plate A, and which constitutes a griping-pla-te, operating, in connection with tholower part, b, ofthe plato A,-to grasp the back of the shoe or gaiter, as hereinafter presentlyfully set forth. P ivoted te the hack ofthe plate A, at a point above the griping-jawrB, is a lever, C, which is curved, and brought into lsu'ch position that, when its upper arm, c, is pressed toward the part a ofthe plate A, the lower arm, d, thereof will act upon the upper extremity, e, vot' the griping-plate B, land move the same toward the -broad lower portion of the just hereinbefore-mentioned plate A.
It should be mentioned that the griping-plate Bis furnished, at its forward or concavo'side, with teeth or studs, a', which enable it to grasp the back of the shoe or gaiter with increased firmness when the implement is i used; and, furthermore, a spring, 6*, is so applied between the plate A and thc gripingplateB-as to press outward the lower partei' the plate B, to enable the implement to be conveniently applied to the shoe or gaiter.
In using the implement, the fbaclc of the shoe or gaiter is inserted between the lower portion of-theplte A and the griping-plat'e B, as shown in the red` outline in iig. 2, whereupon, 'the upper part, a, ot'the plate A, and the upper armof the lever C, being grasped by the hand, and brought toward each other, the plates A B clamp or clasp the back ofthe shoe or gniter between them, the teeth or studs a enabling a rm hold to be had upon the said back. This beiugdone, the foot is inserted into the opening of the shoe or guitar, and the back is drawn upward over the heel of .the footthc'h'eel sliding easily upon the smooth concave surface of thoplate A, and the implement enabling the back part of the shoe or gait'er to be drawn upward. upon the foot.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the lever-plate A, griping-plate B, spring b, and holding-lever C, substantially asand for the purpose specified.
2. The teeth or studs a', provided upon the inner surface of the griping-'plate B, and arranged in rrelation with the back of` the plate A, substantially as and for the purpose specified. l r
` WM. H. WINANS.
