SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,914, dated June 15, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE I. MoUNcE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Shoe-Stretchers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a top or plan view ofa shoe-stretcher embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section in line or m, Fig. 3 represents a transverse section in line 1 3 ,Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

My invention consists of pivoted jaws which i are provided with handles, to one of which is fitted a screw, the point whereof is adapted to bear against the other handle, whereby the jaws may be separated in a convenient and powerful manner.

Referring to the drawings, A represents two jaws, which are somewhat of segmental form, and connected by a screw, B, forming a pivot, whereby they may be moved in opposite directions, the jaws having handles 0, through the end of one of which is fitted a screw, D, whose point is adapted to bear against the inner side of the end of the other jaw, as most clearly seen in Fig. 1.

The jaws are introduced into the shoe by the handles, this being conveniently accomplishcd owing to the curvature of the tool in the direction of its length, the handles remain ing outside of the shoe. The screw is now properly rotated, whereby the jaws are forced apart, and the pressure is exerted on the shoe in opposite directions, thus stretching the same, it being evident that the movement of the jaws is accomplished in a powerful manner, owing to the screw D, and, as the thumbhead or handle of the latter is accessible at the side of the handle of the device the said screw is operated in a convenient manner. By rotating the screw in opposite directions the jaws are permitted to close, and the tool may be removed from the shoe.

The portions of the outer faces of thejaws around the opening to receive the screw B are countersunk for the head B and not B of said screw, whereby said head and nut are flush with the jaws, avoiding projections of said parts beyond the faces of thejaws.

The outer sides of the jaws are formed with flanges E, which provide broad surfaces for contact with the leather, preventing the cutting of the same, and openings are made in said flanges for attaching pads to the jaws at places where bunions or protnberances exist on the foot.

In practice each jaw and handle are made integral of cast metal.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The improved shoestreteher, formed of pivoted jaws with handles, and a screw which is fitted to one of said handles and adapted to bear against the other handle, substantially as described.

2. In a shoe-stretcher, the pivoted jaws A, having handles 0, and a transversely-extending screw, said jaws'and handles being curved,

substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a shoe-stretcher, the pivoted jaws A, having handles 0, and a transversely-extending screw, D, the said jaws having flanges E, with openings, all combined substantially as described.
