CHAIN TONGS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,848, dated July 14, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES F. HULTGREN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Chain Tongs, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to that type of pipe tongs or wrenches in which a section of chain and a serrated shoe constitute the means for engaging the pipe or other article, and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient construction and formation of the holding shoe or head whereby beaded pipefittings and other like beaded articles can be engaged and manipulated in a ready, safe,and efficient manner, all as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be more particularly pointed out in the claims.

I attain such objects by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a fragmentary side elevation illustrating the present invention in engagement with a beaded elbow or pipe-fitting; Fig. 2, an end elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a detail plan view of the shoe and handle of the pipe-tongs Fig. 4, a general side view, on a reduced scale, of the complete pipe-tongs.

Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several views.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the handle portion of the tongs, of any usual form and size and preferably of the usual tapering form and made of wrought metal; 2, the holding shoe or head, formed with a serrated segmental holding-face and secured by bolts, rivets, or other usual means at one end of the handle portion, as usual in the present type of tongs. Such holding shoe or head is preferably formed in two halves or sections for convenience and economy in manufacture.

3 is the usual holding-chain section secured at one end to the holding-shoe 2 by lugs 4 or other usual means upon the shoe 2, the other end of said chain being adapted for adjustable connection to said shoe by means of a pair of lugs 5 upon said shoe, that form an open-sided engaging socket to receive and hold the chain in the usual and ordinary manner.

present case to any of the features of construction so far described, the novel and material features of the present invention consisting in aconstruction of parts as follows: 6 is a central channel or recess, preferably of an angular or V shape in cross-section, formed in the segmental holding-face of the shoe or head 2 and dividing such faceinto apair of individual holding- surfaces 7 and 8, having a parallel and separated relation, as shown. The surface of such channel is preferably serrated to correspond with the serrations in the adjacent holding- surfaces 7 and 8 and are intended to have active engagement with the crown of the circular bead or flange of a pipe-fitting or valve in the operation of screwing such fitting or valve to place or a subsequent unscrewing of the same. The angular or V shape of such channel is preferred in that'it afiords an automatic means for tentering the holding-shoe upon said bead or flange of the pipe-fitting, and accordingly facilitates the application of the tongs when required for use.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A chain tongs of the character herein described, comprising in combination an operating-handle, a clamping-chain, and a holding head or shoe formed with a channel in its serrated segmental holding-face, which channel has a V shape in cross-section and is adapted to receive and have. holding engagement with the beaded portion of a pipe-fitting or the like, substantially as set forth.

2. A chain tongs of the character herein described, comprising in combination an operating-handle, a clamping-chain, and a hold ing head or shoe formed with a channel in its serrated segmental holding-face which channel has a V shape in cross-section and correspondingly serrated and is adapted to receive and have holding engagement with the beaded portion of a pipe-fitting or the like, substantially as set forth.
