Description

T. B. SHELLY.
Shoemak'ers Pincers.
Attest Jnvenlor @www y DJM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS B. SHELLY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOENAKERS PINCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,594, dated October 14, 1873; application filed March 7A, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. SHELLY, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoemakers Pinchers; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved pinchers. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the upper lever detached. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the lower lever and its sectional jaw.
Like letters refer to like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an improved form of pinchers for the use of shoemakers, which will take a better grip on the leather and afford a greater leverage than the ordinary pinchers, besides being more convenient to use. The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the pinchers, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, A represents the upper lever, carrying the lower jaw A of the pincher, serrated on its upper surface, and joined to the lever by a web, a, formed by cutting or molding a segmental groove at each side, as seen in Fig. 2. B is the lower lever, cast with one-half of the upper jaw B1, shaped to t and move in the segment groove of the jaw A. The other half of the upper jaw B2 is detachable. It embraces a lug on the inner face of the front end of the lever B, to which it is secured by a key, c, driven inv from the-front, which key is halved into a key-way in the lever, and another in the jaw section. The meeting-faces two parts is to enable it to inclose the web a.
of the jaw A the two halves being secured in place by means of a key, by which means a strong joint is made, which can be readily taken apart, if desired.
The projection b, from its location and conformation as a fulcrum, gives the pinchers a far greater leverage than can be obtained from those of ordinary construction.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction and arrangement of the levers A B, jaws A,B1B2, and pendent fulcrums b connected by the key c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
