- My improvement consists in forming a recess in -the head of the screw D, as at A, iig. 1, and inserting therein a spring, made in any of the known forms. It mayY be of lrubber or other elastic substance faced with metal', but I prefer a curved steel spring, as represented at A, figs. l and 2, of suiiicient rigidity to overcome the gravitation of the lever, C, and retain it in whatever position placed; but, it is free to move up or down, right or left, by applying sufficient force with tbe hand to overcome'tlie resistance of the spring B.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY 4CONCERN:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. PERKINS, of North Adams, in the county of Berkshire, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vises; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of tlie'snme, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of' this specification, in wliich- Figure 1 is a side elevation, part in section,oi` a vise-screw and lever. p
Figure 2, a front elevation, also part -in section, of the same, showing the improvements.
The same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures. v
My improvement. consists in forming a recess in -the head of the screw D, as at A, iig.
The advantage of this arrangement is that' an 'article can be held very`lightly in the vise; and the lever C placed in position to hold it there without the liability of its sliding to one side and unscrewjng the vise by its oWn gravitation, as is often the case with all the other vises. It can be operated much qnicker than with the old arrangement, and without the liability of pinching the operators lingers.
Having fully described my improvement, its construction and operation, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
I claim the spring B or its equivalent, in combination with screw D and lever C, as herein described, and for the purpose specified.
B. F. PERKINS.
