Description

No. 650,675. Patented May 29, I900. m. E. ELDRIDGE.
TOY FURNITURE.
(Application filed Nov, 21, 1899.)
(No Model.)
MARY EMMA ELDRIDGE, OF ADAMSFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOY FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,675, dated May 29, 1900. Application filed November 21, 1899. Serial No. 737,732. (No model.)
tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to toy furniture, and has for one object to provide a blank of thin material of a novel shape adapted to be folded and secured in folded form to constitute an article of toy furniture.
A further object is to provide the blank with securing and strengthening portions adapted when' the blank is folded to add strength and rigidity to the furniture, so that the same may be handled as a toy without lia bility of collapsing.
In this application the invention is described and shown as applicable to a crib; but it will be evident that with very slight and immaterial'changes a bedstead or analogous article could be constructed.
lVith the above-mentioned and other objects in view my invention is embodied in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and particularly set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a crib embodying my invention, but desire it understood that I do not limit the improvement in its applications to exact construction whichI have there shown to enable others to understand the invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 shows a cribblank illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the crib formed from said blank. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View of the crib shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a perspective of a slightly-modified form.
Referring to the drawings, and especially to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, Aindicates a blank formed from any suitable material, such as stiff paper, thin sheet metal, or any sheet material adapted to be folded or bent and when secured in folded form to retain said form.
B represents the main body portion of the blank, which is of generally rectangular shape and is divided by parallel indicating or folding lines, score-marks, or other suitable indications l 2 3 4 into a bottom portion A and side portions 13' and B Projecting from one end of the body portion B,near one side and divided therefrom by a suitable indicating or folding line or crease 1 6, is a head or end section 0. Opposite the said head-section and divided from the main body portion by folding line or crease 2 '7 is an opposite end or foot section D.
8 9 and 10 11 are folding-lines, respectively, on the end sections 0 and D and providing securing portions 0 and (Z. Immediately below the head and foot sections C and D and divided therefrom by the foldinglines l 8 and 2 10 are strengthening and stiffening portions E and F, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear, and below the portions E and F are supporting portions G H, (here shown in the form of rockers,) one end of each of which (indicated at g h) is cut from the bottom section A. The supports are divided from the stiffening-sections E and F by folding-lines 12 Band 14: 15.
Such being the construction of the blank, it is intended to be folded into crib form and secured in the following manner: The body portion is bent on the line 1 2 at right angles to theside portion B',forming the bottom, and the side B is bent up at right angles on the line 3 4:. The head and foot sectionsC andD are then bent at right angles to the side B on the lines 1 6 and 2 7, thus forming the rectangular crib-body. These parts may be secured in an y preferred or suitable manner, as by tongues on the securing portions 0 and d engaging in slots in the side B Numerous other securing means will readily suggest themselves. With the parts in this condition the stiffening and strengthening portions E and F will project downwardly below the crib-bottom. These portions E and F are ing tongues and slots.
ers G H are then bent down at right angles to the bottom along the lines 12 13 and 14 15, and the crib is completed.
The modified construction shown in Fig. 4 is in all respects similar to that shown in the other figures, with the exception that the stifiening portions E and F are not shown bent and secured to the bottom, but as extended, and constitute portions of the supports.
Any desired configuration may be given to the various parts of the crib to improve its appearance and which may be varied without departing from my invention. For instance, the sides and foot section may have suitably-curved upper edges, as shown, and the head-section may be provided with a canopy top or cover by folding the upper portion thereof on the folding-lines indicated at 16 and 17in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein-described blank for toy furniture, such as a bed, formed of thin material and comprising a central body portion adapted to be folded to constitute a bottom and two opposite sides B and B ahead portion attached to one end of said side 13, afoot portion attached to the other end of said side B, said head and foot portions adapted to be folded and secured to the other side B and supporting portions constituting extensions of the head and foot portions, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described blank for toy furniture formed of thin material and comprising a central body portion, adapted to be bent to constitute a bottom and opposite sides, a head portion joining one end of said body portion, a foot portion joining the other end of said body portion, supporting portions, and stiifening portions joining said head and foot portions with the supporting portions, said stifiening portions adapted to be bent and secured to the bottom, substantially as described.
3. The herein-described blank for toy furniture formed of thin material adapted to be folded and comprising bottom section A, side sections B and B head-section C, foot-section D, stiffening portions E and F, and supporting portions G and H, all arranged substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
