- Box coucu.
(No Model.)

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE T SMALLWOOD AND ADAM H. SULSER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
BOX-COUCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 646,471, dated April 3, 1900.
Applioatioufiled November 8, 1899- Serial No. 736,225. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE T. SMALL- wooD and ADAM I-I. SULsER, residents of WVashington, District of Columbia, have in- 5' venteda new and useful Improvement in Box- Couches, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification. Our invention relates to box-couches, an
more particularly to a box-couch having the IO top or cover hinged at its rear edge directly to the upper edge of the box proper, combined with means acting to assist in the opening movement of the cover and a stop to determine the extent or limit of said opening move- I 5 ment.
We have illustrated our invention in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure l is a view of a vertical transverse section of a couch with the cover closed, and
Fig. 2 is a like view-with the cover open. Fig.
3 is a view of a modification.
Referring to the drawings, A is a box of the usual construction in this class of couches, and B is a cover, which may be a plain boxcover or upholstered, as desired, said cover one of its ends attached to the rear portion of the cover, preferably near its top, and the other end attached to the rear of the box A, preferably near its bottom. One or more of such springs may be employed, as may be For the purpose of limiting the action of the spring in the opening movement of the cover we prefer to employ a suitable stop, here shown as a rod E, inserted within the coils of the spring D, the length of the rod being such that when the cover is thrown open, so that its rear side lies horizontali. 6., at right angles to the plane of the rear wall of the box--the ends of the rod E will abut the walls of the box and the cover,
respectively, or of suitable stop devices operating in connection with the spring for that purpose. If desired, such stop devices may be placed within the coils of the spring above and below the ends of the rod, thereby adjusting the action of the stop, so as to enable it to determine the opening movement of the cover at any desired point.
It will be observed that the couch herein described is exceedingly simple, that the devices necessary to enable it to be readily opened and to be held in the proper position are cheap and easily applied, and that the 0011- struction and operation of the same are such that it is not liable to get out of order.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the rear edge of the cover B extends some distance to the rear of the rear wall of the box, and the spring is attached directly to the box and to an upwardly-projecting arm or bracket on the cover and near the top thereof, a slot being formed in the rearward projection on the cover to permit the spring to pass therethrough. In this form the cover may be opened, as shown in dotted lines, Without thus acting as a stop for determining the opening movement of the cover. If desired, however, the rod E may be placed within the coils of the spring D, as in the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. In cases where it is desired to limit the opening movement of the cover before it has reached the full upright position this form of stop will be preferable to that afforded by the rear extension 13 coming in contact with the rear wall of the box.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- 1. A box having its cover hinged to the rear wall thereof, a spring directly attached to the cover and to the box to assist in the opening movement of the cover, and a stop device acting in conjunction with the spring to limit the action of the latter.
2. The combination of a box and its cover hinged thereto, with a coil-spring attached at one end to the box and at the other end to the cover, and a rod acting as a stop to determine the opening movement of the cover.
3. The combination of a box,the cover therefor, hinges uniting the cover to the upper rear edge of the box, a coil-spring connected at one end to the cover and at the other end to 100 the box, and a rod within the coil-spring act- In testimony whereof we have signed this ing as a. stop to determine the opening move specification in the presence of two subserib- 1o ment of the cover. in g witnesses.
4. The combination of abox, a. cover hinged GEORGE '1. SMALLWOOD. 5 to but projecting beyond the rear wall of the ADAM H. SULSER.
box, and a spring attached to the cover and Witnesses: to the box to assist in the opening movement S. T. CAMERON,
of the cover. WM. B. KERKAM.
