UNION GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 645,694, dated March 20, 190b, Application filed deptem'ber 25, 1899- Serial No. 731,622. (No model.)
ing a'neat, tasty, and finished appearance at the waist through the medium of anextension having a front appearance simulating a vest of either single or double form without interfering in the least in the general construction of trousers and avoiding the inconvenient and ofttirnes annoying extra thickness of material at the back, as in the ordinary form of vest or separate garment of this character, by making the improved device of skeleton form at the back and in the shape of connecting devices to sustain the vest extension at a proper elevation on the person of the wearer.
Other objects and advantages will be disclosed in the subjoined description and the novelty hereinafter claimed, an embodiment of the improved device beingillustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a greater portion of a pair of trousers embodying the features of the invention and looking toward the front. Fig. 2 is a similar view, looking toward the rear, of the improved trousers, the scale being larger than that of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of an upper portion of the improved device looking toward the interior. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of the combination garment looking toward the right hand corner or termination of the vest and adjacent upper body portion of the trousers and broken away in part to illustrate the connection of the several devices.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views. a
The numeral 1 designates trousers of any preferred shape and having the usual fly 2 and pockets 3, the latter, as shown, being known-as side pockets, but may be easily replaced by top pockets, as the improved at tachment will not interfere with the latter ob vious provision. At the back and below the waist-line or about said line the usual straps 4 are secured for providing the necessary tension, as will be readily understood;
The improvement resides in the provision of an upper vestextension which forms a con tinuation of the upper body portion 6 of. the trousers. There are several modes of form ing thislextension and combining it with the upper trousers-body, and, as shown by Fig. 3, the trousers-body 6 is extended upwardly to a greater length than usualin this class of devices and has applied thereto a front facing 7 of suitable material,which is cut and shaped,- as shown in Fig. 1, to form two flaps S and 9,
which are given the configuration or made to represent the lower portion of a vest and have opposite pockets 10 and 11. As shown the vest is of the double-breasted form; but it is apparent that it could be as readily made in single form, and which could be accomplished by reducing the length of the lower extremity of the flap 8. The buttonhole side of the fly 2 is extended up over the flap 8, as at 12,'(see Fig. 4,) and the overlapping portion of said flap projectsbeyond'the margin of said portion of the fly and is supplied with buttonholes 13 to receive buttons 14 on the overlapped portion of the flap 9. The button side 15 of the fiy 2 extends almost completely to the top edge of the fiap 9, and the upper portion thereof hasa securing-tab 16, suitably provided with a buttonhole to engage a button 17, or it may be fastened by any of the well-known connecting devices for this purpose. By extending the opposite portions of the fly 2 in the manner specified the shape of the upper body 6 of the trousers is preserved, and a bulky appearance is obviated by reason of the fact that the waistband construction of ordinary trousers is dispensed with. The extension of the fly in the manner stated also provides an additional and beneficial securement for the flap 9 and a close unity thereof with the flap 8, which will produce a finished external appearance in either a single or double form of vest-front and over the interior of the fiaps 8 and 9 linings 18 of suitable material are applied, which may be of any suitable material and design.
The vest extension extends around toward the opposite sides of the front of the upper body 6 of the trousers almost to the side seams 19, after the manner of an ordinary vestfront; but this will be regulatedin accordance'with the requirements and desire of the wearer; but in all constructions the opposite side terminals of the vest extension will rarely, if ever, extend beyond the said side seams 19 and over the adjacent rear portion of the upper body of the trousers. From the upper portions of the opposite ends of the vest extension connecting-straps 20 extend rearwardl y and have their broadest portions at the front caught in the material of the vest ends, as at 21 and clearly shown by Fig. 5. These straps 20 are reduced gradually toward their terminals,and when in operative position an open space 22 is formed between the lower edges of the same and the upper edge of the rear portion of the waistband of the trousers. This open space and the use of the straps 20 to replace the ordinary vestback allows the body of the wearer to be thoroughly ventilated and cooled at the back and avoids the uncomfortable sensation produced in warm weather by athickness of material in a vest against the back. The said straps 20 are also applied at such point as to hold the upper portion of the vest extension in adjustable contact with the front part of the body of the wearer and also keeps the said upper part of the vest extension well up and in proper position. It is intended that the straps 20 be connected by a suitable intermediate device 23, and as a means of attaching the suspender-ends so as to cover the same the buttons or other devices 24 for this purpose are applied to the inner lining of the front, sides, and rear.
It will be observed that the combinationgarment is especially intended for use in hot weather, and all the parts of the improved attachment are preserved in the natural shape of. ordinary vests without the inconvenience of the usual back-covering in such devices. It is intended that the flaps 8 and 9 be permanently fastened to the upper body of the trousers or removably attached thereto by any suitable means, and the said flaps and trousers may be made of the same material or of different patterns, having harmonizing colors. At times also the vest attachment set forth may be fastened to an ordinary pair of trousers and produce the same desired effect.
Changes in the form, proportions,and minor details may be resorted to without in the least departing from the nature of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A combination-garment, comprising a pair of trousers having a front vest extension connected'to the upper body portion thereof and terminating at the side seams ofthe trousers, the rear extremities of the said extension being reduced in the form of straps which are unattached to the trousers except at the points where they connect with the opposite portions of the vest extension and adapted to be attached to each other above the rear upper edge of the trousers and provide a ventilating-opening between said edge of the trousers and the straps, the fly of thetrousers being continued at the front upwardly in rear of and forming a part of the opposite sections of the said vest extension adjacent the points of connection of the latter, the said extension replacing the ordinary waistband at the front of the trousers and projecting above and below the location of the latter.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures the presence of two witnesses.
