IMPROVEMENT IN SKATES.
fthe clgehule nieren tu in ilgrsc ettels jutent amb making init nf tige same.
TO ALL l-VHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES GOQCH, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skates; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the nrt to malte and use the same, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. i
The present inventionrelutes to clamps for securing skates to the soles of boots and shoes, which clamps are of such a construct-ion that they een be readily applied and adapted to any ot' the ordinary woodenframe skates which ere provided with straps for strapping them to the foot of thcwearer. In thc accompanying drawings my improvement in skates is illustrated- Figure l being,l a plan view of the under side o'i n skate having my clamps applied thereto.

Figures 3 and 4, transverse vertical sections teken in the planes of the respective lines :indy/y, fig. 1; and
Figure 5, a detail view on an enlargedseale et' one of the clamps.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parte.
A, in the drawings, represents the ordinary wooden frame or foot-rest of e skate, which, at or near its front and rear ends, is provided with the usual reetanguiar-shaped holes B to receive thestraps that are commonly employed for strapping a. skate to a. hoot or shoe. C, the runner or blade to the skate. D, my improved clamps, which are made in two parts or sections, E, each of which consists of a flat plete, F, of suitable size and shape to rt in the holes B of the foot-rest A, and provided with an upright arm, G, having alprong or prongs, H, :1t one ofits ends. I, a bolt connecting the two parts Etoget-her, to one of which it is secured, while through the other it loosely extends and is provided with a thumbnut, J, at its outer end, by the turning of which, either to the 'right or left, the two parts of the clamp are caused to be either drawn toward or moved away from each other, as the case may be, whereby, as is obvious, theirpronged arms G may be made to embed themselves in the sides of the sole of the boot or shoe, and thus to secure the skate rmly thereto. By my improved clamp, when so desired, they can be detached from .the skates, and are in fact entirely independent thereof, requiring no alteration in the skate-rest, but leaving itV free to be used with straps, as before.
I ela-im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-.-
The clamp D, fitting irl the holes B of the foot-'rest A, consisting of the plates F with inclined inner edges, and having pronged upright arms G, and adjusted' by means of the bolt I and thumb-nut J, as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 5th day of January, 1867.
'l I CHARLES GOOCH.
