Be it known that 1', YVILLIAMI'I. SNYDER, of

San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco i and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe Makers Lasts; and I do herebydecl are that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part ofthis specification, and in which Figure 1 ma longitudinal vertical sectional view of my improved last. Figs. .2 and 3 are perspective views of the two parts of the last separated, and Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective detail views of the locking devices detached.

My invention has relation to shoe-makers lasts and it consists in the improved eonstruction and combination of parts of the fastenings for attaching the block to the body of the last, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the body of the last, and B the block, which fits into the recess 0 in the top of the body of the last, both of which parts are of the usual construction. The edges D of the point of the block are beveled, and fit under the correspondingly-beveled end, E, of the recess 0, thus holding the point of the block in place, and the rear end of the block is held in place bymeans of atriangular plate, F, beveled at its forward pointing sides, fastened to a plate, G, secured to the underside of the block, by means of screws H, and fitting into a corresponding]y-beveled triangular slot, 1, in the rear end of a plate, J, which is fastened. in a recess, K, in the upper rear portion of the recess C, so tl lat the triangular beveled plate may.

Inside plate G is a plate, L, the forward end of which forms two cars or lugs, M, between which a lever, N, bent at a right angle, is pivoted at its knee, projecting into a recess, 0, in the block. A spring, P, fastened to plate L, bears with its free end against the upwardlypointing arm of the lever against its rear edge, and the forwardlypointing arm block, which is usually of the lever is provided with a downwardlypointing lug, Q, which projects and catches into a perforation, R, in the .forward endof plate J, thus preventing the block from bein ,with drawn when caught. In this manner it willbe seen that the block is released from the body of the last in the moment the last-key is inserted, allowing it to be withdrawn, while it will remain firmly locked in place after it has been inserted, and the triangular plate and the slot, having their edges beveled,will allow the block to be easily inserted and withdrawn, and will hold the block firmly in place, the beveled edges wearing to a seat by use without becoming worn, so as to fit loosely.
