f DRILL-TOOTH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,518, dated March 3, 1891.
Serial No. 357,936. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that We, THOMAS MARR and CHARLES W. SMITH, citizens of the United States, and both residing at \VarrentOn, in the county of Fauquier and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill-Teeth, of, which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to that class of drillteeth which are provided with removable points; and the object ot' our invention is to make the points of an improved form and to attach them to the boots of the drill in an improved way.
The subject-matter claimed is hereinafter designated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a seed-drill with our improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
The drill-boot A is of) any approved con-.
struction. Our invention does not involve any change in the boot itself, as we contemplate so forming the point that it may be readily adapted and attached to any usual form'of boot. The point B is curved in crosssection, adapted to lit closely the front of the boot. The opposite ends are curved outwardly and the main body portion is nearly straight or only slightly curved.
The longitudinal edges of the point or tooth are made thinner than the central portion, and are annealed, so as to be readily bent vor shaped to fit any boot- The central portion and the opposite ends are tempered to afford In the central portion we form a series of holes b,
four being shown inthe drawings, and the outer edges of these holes are countersunk to receive the head of the bolt O, so that the outer face of the head of the bolt lies flush with the surface of the tooth, so that there is no liability to catch dirt, dto., which would obstruct the tooth and hinder its easy working. Only one hole a is made in the boot, and through this ,hole the bolt O extends. The nut D is made ot' a sufficient size to enable a wrench to be easily applied, and the inner face of the nut is rounded to tit snugly the inner curved surface ot the boot. The nut is of a depth corresponding with the length of the bolt between its inner end and the inner face of the boot. By this arrangement the tooth or point is rigidly secured to the boot. There is no danger of slipping, and all auxiliary appliances for preventing the point from slipping are dispensed with.
By means of theholes Z) the point maybe set to any desired position to accommodate Wear, and may be reversed. As before stated, the under side of the point tits closely the front face ofthe boot, and there is no givingf rocking motion, or undue strain on the connection between the point and the boot.
Ve claim as o f our own invention- 1 The herein-described point or tooth for seed-drills, having bent pointed opposite ends thinner than the tempered body and ends of the tooth, the body of the tooth being provided with one or more apertures, for the purpose specified.
2.-The combination, substantially as hereinbefore setforth, of the boot, the tooth or point having bent pointed opposite ends and a series of oountersunk holes on its outer face, a headed bolt extending through one of the holes and through a hole in the boot and having its head countersunk in the hole, and a nut having a rounded inner face resting against the inner surface of the boot.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names.
THOMAS MARR. CHARLES W. SMITH.
