Description

v. wlETEHnLn el E. DAK.
Brake-Block for wagons N0 ]64,891 Patentedlune22,l87 5.
THE GRAPHIC C0.PNOTO ,-LITILSB 41 PARK PLAGE, N-Y` UNTTED STATEs PATENT OEEIGEo VALLANTINE WIETERHOLD AND ELEXANDER OAK, OF HAMBURG, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRAKE-BLOCKS FOR WAGCNS.
Specification forming palt of Letters Patent No. 164,89 l, datedrJ une Q2, 1875; application led April 1, 1875.
To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that we, VALLANTINE WIE TERHoLD and ELEXANDER OAK, of Hamburg, in thecounty of Fremont, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Blocks; and do hereby declare that the following is a l'ull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction of a brake block for Wagons, and in the mode of fastening the leather thereon, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we willnow proceed to de scribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is an end view of the brake-bar and `bralreblock, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section ofthe same.
A represents the ordinary brake-bar, formed at each end with a dovetail, upon which the brake-block is placed. The brake-bloolr is` made in two parts, B and C, the o'uter face of the part B being inclined from the top and bottom inward to the center, forming an obtuse angle, as shown in Fig. l; The inner face otl the part C is made of corresponding shape., to tit in said angle, while the outer face ot said part C is made slightly concave, as shown. D
represents the leather with which the brake block is to be faced. c a are bolts, passed through the centers of the part-s G and B, and through the bar A, with nuts b b screwed on the ends of the bolts at the rear of the beam. The nuts b b being loosened, the ends ot' the leather are inserted between the two parts ot' the brake'blook at the top and bottom, and the nuts b b then tightly screwed up, thereby securely clamping the leather in its place. e,
Vhen the leather becomes too much worn it can easily be removed and anew one put on. Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A wagon-brake block made iii two parts, in combination with bolts and nuts for clamping the leather between them, substantially A as set forth. s'
2. The combination of the brakebar A, bisected brake-block B C, leather D, bolts a a, and nuts b b, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 8th day of March, 1875.
