CARD-CASE FOR DUPLICATE WHIST.
SPEGIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,664, dated February 6, 1 900.
Application filed October 24, 1898.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK A. BALDWIN, a
Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card-Cases for Duplicate VVhist; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in card-cases for duplicate whist; and its objects are to provide means for separately retaining the whist-hands of cards and so arranged as to fold together in the form of a book, to provide an indicator for eachhand, and to provide certain other new and useful and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying Figure 1 is a perspective View of a device embodying my invention when folded; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same when open; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 4, an enlarged sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 an enlarged perspective view of one of the retaining-springs detached.
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A is an outer covering of flexible material, having the tuck A at one end and the slit A or other suitable fastening near the opposite end. Secured to the covering A and a short distance apart are the two rectangular stiifening-boards B, upon which the four whist-hands of cards 0 O C O are held by the retaining-springs D, two hands upon each board. The springs D are formed of strips of metal having integrally lateral projections D at one end, which projections are bent at right angles to the surface'of said strip to fasten said springs to the boards B, passed through said boards, and clenched on the under side of the same. Each whist-handhas two of these springs D embracing it, one end of said springs being secured to the boards B in the manner described and beneath the hands and thence extending to the edges of said hands are bent at right angles, engaging the edges of the cards, and are again bent at Serial No. 694,462. (No model.)
right angles, their long curved ends lying upon the upper surface of the hand and pressing firmly against the same to prevent the cards from slipping.
The springs D are arranged in pairs, with their portions Din close proximityand their long curved ends extending in opposite directions and in line with each other. Between the covering A and the boards B, at their outer edges and nearthe corner of each hand, is a pocket E to receive an indicator F, pivoted near its edge and exposed to view when turned outward and inclosed in said pocket and hidden from view when turned inward and having a projection F, by which said indicator maybe turned outward when in the pocket. By the form and arrangement of springs shown said springs are securely fastened to the boards and any lateral movement prevented, and the hands are firmly held in close proximity to each other, only the portions D" of the springs separating them. One spring may be used for each hand instead of two, if desired.
The boards B form stiff covers, against which the whist-hands are firmly pressed and held by the springs D, and being secured to the flexible coveringA a short distance from each other allows them to be folded one uponv the other, the end of the covering passed around the edges, and thetuck A inserted in the slit A", thus giving the appearance of a book, as shown in Fig. 1, and forming a case for the cards. I
When the case is opened, it serves the purpose of a whist-board, the hands being separately retained by the springs D and each hand having an indicator, which may be displayed or concealed within its pocket, as deflexible portion at one side, and a tuck at the other side, means for securing the whisthands to said parts, pockets in the edges of said parts, and indicators pivoted near their edges and exposed to View when turned outward and inclosed in said pockets when turned inward and a projection on said indicator, substantially as described.
3. In a card-case for duplicate whist, an outer flexible covering having a tuck at one end and a suitable fastening for the same near the other end, rectangular stiifeningboards attached to said covering and springs attached directly to said boards on the middle line thereof and extending oppositely outward, and bent twice at right angles to embrace the hands of cards, substantially as described.
4. In a card-case for duplicate whist, an outer flexible covering, rectangular stiffening-boards secured to the inner side thereof and at a distance from each other, pockets between said boards and covering, indicators in said pockets,.and springs secured to said boards on the middle line thereof and extending oppositely outward, substantially as described.
5. In a card-case for duplicate whist, an outer flexible covering having a tuck at one end and a slit near the other end, rectangular stiifening-boards secured to the inner surface of said covering and at a distance from each other, pockets between said covering and boards, indicators pivoted to turn into said pockets, projections on said indicators, springs bent twice at right angles and adapted to embrace the hands of cards and having one end engaging the upper surface of said hands, lateral projections on said springs at their opposite ends and extending through said boards and clenched on the under side of the same, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK A. BALDXVIN. \Vitnesses:
