UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER M. BANG, OF DAWSON; MINNESOTA.
BAG-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,068, dated November 14, 1899.
Application filed March 27, 1899. Serial No. 710,676. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it 11mg concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER M. BANG, acitizen of the United States, residing at Dawson, in the county of Lao Qui Parle and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in BagFasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for fastening or closing grain-bags; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same whereby the mouth of a grain or other bag can be rapidly and securely closed and as readily unclosed or opened when desired.
The invention consists in two semicircular arms or jaws hinged or pivoted to each other, and one of said arms at the free end being provided with a pivoted slotted plate provided with a screw-bolt at one end, and the other jaw formed with a lug having a projection, the construction being such that when the jaws are closed around the mouth of the bag the lug will engage with the slot in the plate and the screw-bolt engaged under the projection on said lug, whereby the jaws are prevented from being opened until the bolt is disengaged from the projection and the plate swung outward on its pivot, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of an ordinary grain-bag, showing my improved device or fastener connected therewith, so as to close the mouth thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device removed from the bag. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the jaws closed.
In the said drawings the reference-numerals l and 2 designate two semicircular jaws provided at their inner ends with lugs 3, through which passes a pivot 4:, by which they are hinged to each other. The jaw 1 at its Outer or free end is formed with an ear 5, to Which is pivoted a slotted plate comprising two parallel arms 6, with a space therebetween, connected together at the outer end by a transverse portion 7. Passing through the said portion 7 is a screw-bolt 8. The arm 2 at the outer or free end is formed with a lug 9, havinga projection or rib 10, with which said boltis adapted to engage.
It will be noticed by reference to Figs. 2 and 3 that the inner edges of the jaws are beveled, forming wedge-shaped sharpened edges, which will bite in or engage with the material of the bag, and thus hold the device securely thereto. This will be especially ad vantageous in the beginning of the operation, when the jaws are being tightened, as it will prevent slipping of the jaws, so that the latter will be held tightly down upon the body of the bag.
The manner of using the device is as follows: The jaws are opened and passed around the mouth of the bag and then closed. The slotted plate is then turned so that the lug 9 will enter the slot or space between the arms 6, and the bolt is then turned so that its inner end will bear against the lug under the projection 10 thereof. The bag will now be securely closed without any liability of being accidentally opened or of the fastener being disconnected. By reversing the above operation the bag can be opened.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is In a bag-fastener, the combination with the two semicircular jaws provided with lugs at one end, the pivot-pin passing therethrough and said jaws having their inner sides beveled forming wedge-shaped sharpened edges, and provided with lugs at the free ends, one of which lugs is formed with a projection, of the plate comprising the parallel arms with a space therebetween greater or wider than the thickness of said jaws and pivotally connected with the other lug at the free end of the jaw and the screw-bolt passing through a correspondingly-threaded opening in the free end of said plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PETER M. BANG.
