BAG-CLOSING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7, 1908.
Application filed August 9. 1906. Serial No. 329875.
T 0 all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, LARS Ron, of the city of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Closing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to "bag closing devices, and its object is to provide a simple and inex ensive means for securely closing the mont 1 of a bag or similar article.
A further object is to provide a bag tie which will be durable and of few parts, and which may be used repeatedly without being liable to damage by rough usage.
To accomplish these objects I provide a curved body member, of any suitable material, having a slot therein containing an eccentrically pivoted cam, having notches in the curved face thereof to engage a locking catch. A strip of leather or other suitable material, fixed at one end to the body member and at the other end adapted to pass between the cam and the end wall of the slot complete the device.
In the drawings which illustrate my inventionz Fignre 1 is a perspective view of the device in operation. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 1-2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device.
Referring to the drawings, 3 designates a bag and 4 the curved body of the closure device having a slot 5 therethrough. A cam 6 is eccentrically pivoted at 7 in the slot 5 and is provided with notches 8 in its curved face 9. The curvature of one side of the cam is broken by a flat face 10, the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained. A strip of leather 11, or other suitable material, is fixed to the body at 12, and the free end is passed between the wall 13 of the slot 5 and the cam 6. A catch 14 is pivotally secured to the body at 15 and its free end 16 is adapted to engage the notches S in the cam 6.
The operation of the device consists in passing the loop, shown in Fig. 2, around the gathered neck of the bag and then pulling the loop as tightly as possible. The eccentrically pivoted cam 6 does not oppose the operation of drawing the strap in one direction, but as soon as the loop is made sufficiently tight, the cam 6 is partially rotated in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2 so that the edge 17, formed by the meeting of the faces 9 and 10 engages the leather strip 11 and forces it against the wall 13 of the slot 5. Any tendency to stretch the loop will, owing to the eccentricity of the cam 6, force the edge 17 closer to the wall 13. To loosen the closure device, it is only necessary to give the free end of the leather strap a quick pull or jerk by which means the edge 17 is released and the cam partially rotated in a backward direction. To prevent an accidental jerk on the end of the strap 11 from loosening the grip of the cam 6, I provide the auxiliary catch 14, which is adapted to swing outwardly, as shown in Fig. 3. hen the cam is in locked position, this catch is turned so that its end 16 engages one of the notches 8, thus securely locking the cam against accidental displacement.
The advantages of this device will be obvious. A considerable saving of time and labor is efl'ected in the tying operation, while the contents of the bag are secured during long transportation.
Having thus described my invention so that the same may be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described, a curved body member having a slot therein, an eccentrically pivoted cam operating in said slot and provided with a plurality of notches in one side thereof and an angular corner on the opposite side thereof, a closure strap fixed at one end to said curved member and having its other end passing between the angular corner ol said cam and the wall of said slot, and a pivoted locking catch adapt ed to engage the notches of said cam.
2. A bag tie comprising a body member having a slot therein, a pivoted eccentric operating in said slot and provided with a plurality of notches at one side thereof, a closure strap fixed at one end to said curved member and adapted to be gripped between the eccentric and the wall of said slot, and a curved locking catch adapted to engage the notches of said eccentric.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
LARS ROD.
